Job description

The Senior Network Engineering role is responsible for consulting on the design of, and installing, deploying and maintaining functional and secure networks. Responsible for troubleshooting and optimizing client networks. Installs and troubleshoots software applications relevant to systems being deployed and suggests other tools that may enhance service delivery. Requires excellent problem-solving skills, thorough knowledge of network administration and architecture, and an understanding of security and data protection processes & systems. Able to lead workstream activities, manage critical priorities, and serve as the point of contact on client task lists.
This is an on-site position.
What you'll own:
Design and deploy functional networks and systems:
  • Configure and install software, switches, routers, firewalls and other network devices
  • Monitor network performance and integrity; utilize network diagnostic, monitoring and analysis toolsets
  • Resolve client issues and support tickets from the helpdesk, or internal tiered escalation requests
  • Automate tasks and monitor effectiveness
  • Lead and mentor team members on technical issues
  • Create and test security measures (e.g., access authentication and disaster recovery)
  • Communicate with team leads, stakeholders and clients on status of deliverables
  • Create and maintain complete technical documentation
  • Develop and implement improvements to network performance, capacity, and scalability

Do what it takes to finish projects:
  • Manage time effectively and work on projects with minimal guidance, keep project deliverables on schedule; demonstrate ability to work autonomously and efficiently
  • Ability to design, deploy, and troubleshoot network and server infrastructures of all sizes
  • Comprehend and execute tasks outlined by a statement of work or project plan, suggest other opportunities for critical services that align to client needs
  • Lead and work in a team environment and support other individuals in a primary or secondary role

Requirements
What we're looking for:
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience as a network or systems engineer; at least 2 of those years at a senior level
  • GEM (Government, Education or Medical) experience desired
  • Expert knowledge of enterprise level network design, engineering, and administration
  • Ability to quickly gain expertise in new technologies to fulfill customer requirements and develop creative solutions

Deep experience in any of these six specific skills a huge plus:
1. Aruba, including ClearPass. Certifications - Aruba ACCP, ACMP, ACCX/ACMX
2. Exchange Server - installations, upgrades and migrations
3. VMware vCenter / ESXi, VMware Horizon View, VMWare vSphere, VMWare vCloud Director
4. Microsoft SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager)
5. SAN storage management, data protection and backup/DR systems6. SQL
  • Proficiency in general-purpose scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python
  • 2+ mid-level or 1 expert-level certification(s) from strategic vendors such as Extreme, Palo Alto, HPE, Cisco: Mid-level Examples: Palo Alto PCNSA, Extreme Certified Specialist, Aruba ACCP, ACMP. Expert-Level Examples: Cisco CCIE, Palo Alto PCNSE, Aruba ACCX/ACMX
  • The ability to solve problems within the network proactively and after they arise. The ability to use analytical skills to understand problem origination, apply a logical troubleshooting process to effectively solve the issue, determine root cause, and prevent it from recurring
  • The ability to explain technical issues to non-technical individuals, and the ability to build strong client relationships
  • Skills to mentor team members on technical issues, and provide team and client training as required
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
  • Provide excellent written and verbal communication to customers, Lockstep team members, and vendors
  • Maintain relationships and cultivate new opportunities with customers - provide white glove service
  • Display a high degree of professionalism: disciplined in timekeeping and punctuality, self-motivated and able to work in a fast paced environment
  • Be detail and fact-oriented; results focused

Expertise in core infrastructure services including:
  • Switching - VLANs, STP, LACP, MLAG
  • Routing - Static, OSPF, BGP, IEGRP
  • Wireless - 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Captive Portal, Channel Management
  • DHCP
  • DNS
  • 802.1x
  • LLDP, SNMP, Syslog, ACLs

Experience with 3 or more of the following skills:
  • Design and implementation of Extreme Networking Switching/Routing/Fabric
  • Design and implementation of Extreme Networking NAC/XMC
  • Design and implementation of Cisco Switching/Routing
  • Firewall migrations from SonicWall/ASA to Palo Alto/FortiGate
  • Design, implementation, and upgrades of VMware vSphere
  • Implementation of iSCSI storage in virtualized infrastructure
  • Design, implementation, and upgrades of VM-based backup architectures such as Veeam or Cohesity
  • Design and implementation of Citrix NetScaler
  • Design, implementation, and upgrades of Active Directory Domain Services
  • Trained in the operation of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Outlook.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 administration & converting existing email platforms to a Microsoft 365 environment
  • Migration of mail services into O365
  • Migration of mail services into gSuite
  • Experience with Azure File Hosting and storage
  • Greenfield and brownfield deployments of ASA, FortiGate, or Palo Alto Firewalls
  • Design and implementation of Controller-based wireless solutions from Cisco, Aruba, or Extreme
  • Design and implementation of SDWAN solutions from vendors such as VeloCloud, Silver Peak, Palo Alto, Citrix
  • Design and implementation of 802.1x authentication both at a switching level and backend Microsoft PKI infrastructure
  • Provide top level support for troubleshooting Networking, Firewall, or Load Balancer issues
  • Design and implementation of monitoring solutions such as PRTG, LogicMonitor, or Solarwinds
  • Perform in-depth analysis of networking configurations and provide recommendations based on that analysis

Be hands-on:
  • Jump in where needed - unpack, rack, cable, and power up all equipment
  • Utilize basic tools and hardware to install and maintain equipment. This includes but is not limited to pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, ladders, drills, saws, and various other small tools and instruments
  • Visually identify and deploy items such as switches, routers, firewalls, VoIP phones, cameras, wireless access points, servers, CAT5/6/Fiber cabling & terminations, access control hardware with ease and accuracy

What to expect
Travel: 30-60% in-market travel required. Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to lift, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds; with some installations requiring multiple personnel and coordination. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Ability to climb up and down ladders. Office environments could require prolonged sitting at a desk and using a computer and the ability to work in an office with other employees.
