The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for a Senior Network Architectwith our Information Technology Department, located in Lansing, MI.
Position Summary:
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary Range: $110,500. - $137,000.

Position Summary:
The Senior Network Architect will be responsible for installing, operating, and maintaining a heterogeneous on-prem / cloud environment consisting of virtual servers, components, and services. Responsible for high-level network planning, design, and optimization of a heterogeneous on-prem / cloud environment, including all aspects of cloud IT cybersecurity, supportability, and cost.
Essential Functions:
  • Develops strategies and direction for network systems solutions using current and emerging technologies (including wireless and VoIP). Translates business requirements into network or process designs.
  • Performs high-level network planning, design, and optimization of a heterogeneous on-prem / cloud environment, including all aspects of cloud IT cybersecurity, supportability, and cost.
  • Installs, configures, and manages virtual servers, components and services within the AWS and Azure cloud environments.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for all relevant support-related processes and procedures including, but not limited to, updating systems and application technical standards, installation notes, and support procedures.
  • Operate and maintain all integrated systems to support mission operations.
  • Plans and recommends network hardware, systems management software and architecture.
  • Monitors network performance ensures capacity planning is performed and is proactive in assessing and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Performs troubleshooting procedures and designs resolution scrips.
  • May take on the role of Project Leader for special enterprise-wide assignments.
  • Defines critical Network Architectures and designs for the organization.
  • Ensures that all work is documented for future reference; follows quality standards; ensures effective and reliable operation.
  • Coordinates and works with the Chief Architect, Business Relationship Manager, IT Operations Manager to assist in evaluating, designing, and successfully accomplishing changes, upgrades, and new implementations.
  • Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by Manager, BWL or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Specifications:
Required:
  • This position requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Business, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This position requires a minimum of seven to ten years of previous network, Windows, Linux and virtual system administration, troubleshooting and design experience in a datacenter environment that includes on-prem and collocated hosting services. Public cloud hosting experience is required.
  • Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations: Required or to be completed within 1 year of placement:
    • AWS ANS-C01 Certified Advanced Networking- Specialty
    • AWS SAA-C03 Certified Solutions Architect
    • AZ-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator
    • AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer
    • AZ-700 Azure Network Engineer
    • Cisco Certified Network Professional in either Security or Enterprise Technology
    • Cisco Specialty Certification in one area:
      • Designing Enterprise Networks
      • Enterprise Advanced Routing and Services
      • Implementing SD-WAN Solutions
  • Knowledge of network routing and switching configuration skills.
  • Knowledge of LAN, WAN, and Data Centers including routing and communication protocols and Network Architecture.
  • Troubleshooting in a complex environment.
  • Must be willing and able to work outside of normal schedule, as directed by management.
  • Ability to a technical expert / lead in a team environment.
  • Ability to retrieve data from computerized, typed, and written sources.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally or in writing project recommendations with internal teams and external agencies.

  • Proven track record of successful enterprise server migrations/consolidations/upgrades.
  • Ability to analyze and automate existing processes and implement an automation framework.
  • Expert knowledge of MS Azure, AWS cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with RedHat Linux or UNIX desired Experience with methodologies such as agile and ITIL desired.
  • This is a full-time position that provides Level 2 & 3 support, for a 24 x 7 production environment, for all operational and outage issues relating to the infrastructure. Must be willing and able to work overtime/outside of normal schedule to restore the technical infrastructure to full functionality in the event of an unplanned outage.
  • Has experience with hardening operating systems.
  • Strong communication skills; both written and spoken.
  • Must be detail-oriented, producing consistently accurate work.
