Job description

Research shows that women and underrepresented groups only apply to jobs only if they think they meet 100% of the qualifications on a job description. IMO is committed to considering all candidates even if you don't think you meet 100% of the qualifications listed. We look forward to receiving your application!

Work that is meaningful. A job that has impact. Colleagues that inspire. That's what you'll find at Intelligent Medical Objects (IMO), a growing health IT company creating clinical terminology and insights solutions that are used by more than 740,000 US physicians and 4,500 US hospitals to power better patient care and support meaningful analytics.

For all IMO positions, if you live in the Greater Chicagoland Area, Houston, TX, or Roseville, CA, you'll be expected to work from any IMO office 2 days per week.

As the Senior Manager of Natural Language Processing (NLP), you will lead the development, execution, and evolution of a strategic vision for the NLP organization, which will be at the forefront of IMO's business roadmap. Leveraging technical expertise of NLP technology, you'll provide hands on guidance in development, architectural vision, and thought leadership to your team while meeting key product development goals.  You will be responsible for team productivity and career development and serve as a coach who is able to roll up their sleeves and work alongside your team while guiding them to grow both technically and professionally.
What you'll impact
    • Product Development and Innovation: By setting a vision for the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and GenAI at IMO, your strategic leadership will drive the integration of cutting-edge NLP techniques, such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and machine learning algorithms, to solve complex problems and add value to customers.
    • Operational Efficiency and Scalability: Your expertise in development of distributed/scalable systems and high-volume transaction applications will optimize system performance and scalability, and will enable your team to explore more cutting edge solutions in this space.
    • Customer Satisfaction and Market Leadership: By partnering closely with Product Management, Terminology Solutions, and Enterprise Architecture teams, the Senior Manager of NLP will identify opportunities to fuel IMO's products with NLP and GenAI outcomes - meeting the evolving needs of customers and maintaining a competitive edge in the market.
What you'll do:
    • Build out the R&D and Engineering teams within our broader Natural Language Processing organization.
    • Set a vision for the application of NLP & GenAI at IMO within our internal and external products.
    • Mentor and function as a subject matter expert on scalability, systems level thinking, and process improvement within the department.
    • Be an active participant in the career development of your team members through regular mentorship, structured and unstructured professional development conversations like 1:1's and performance reviews, and more.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop diverse teams, including setting clear goals, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
    • Proven track record in resolving interpersonal and team conflicts effectively, making informed decisions under pressure, and guiding teams through complex challenges.
    • Experience in setting performance standards, conducting regular performance evaluations, and implementing performance improvement plans to ensure team members meet or exceed organizational expectations.
    • Ability to translate organizational goals into team-specific objectives, develop strategic plans for team growth and development, and ensure the execution of these plans to achieve desired results.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey expectations, negotiate with stakeholders, and maintain open lines of communication with team members at all levels.
    • Define and track strategically aligned objectives and key results (OKRs) for the NLP R&D and Engineering teams.
    • Become a thought leader in the application of NLP to healthcare terminology.
    • Apply cutting-edge data science techniques including Large Language Models(LLMs), supervised and unsupervised machine learning, semantic analysis, predictive modeling, and other approaches to our products to solve problems and add value to external and internal customers.
    • Partner closely with our Product Management, Terminology Solutions, and Enterprise Architecture teams to identify opportunities to fuel our products with NLP & GenAI outcomes.
    • Apply Agile principles and values with a focus on adaptive leadership, de-centralized decision making and continuous delivery of value.
    • Mentor others, and function as a subject matter expert on scalability, systems level thinking, and process improvement within the department.
    • Be an active participant in the career development of your team members through regular mentorship, structured and unstructured professional development conversations like 1:1's and performance reviews, and more.
What you'll need:
    • Master's in quantitative field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, or equivalent) required.
    • 10+ years of experience working in Natural Language Processing & Artificial Intelligence (AI).
    • 5+ years of experience managing teams using NLP or advanced data science technologies.
    • 5+ years of experience working in Healthcare or Life Science domains.
    • Demonstrated NLP & GenAI development experience in an Agile environment.
    • Strong people leadership including coaching, mentoring, and growing NLP Scientists.
    • A thorough understanding and previous application of NLP, data science, and software/data engineering principles required, preferably with clinical terminology.
    • Experience in Large Language Models (LLMs, eg GPT4, Llama2, etc.)
    • Knowledge of the following Machine Learning Algorithms: Classification, Regression, Clustering, Model Selection, Feature Extraction or equivalent, or any combination of education and experience which would provide an equivalent background.
    • Experience in development of distributed/scalable systems and high-volume transaction applications.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Experience managing global teams preferred.
