Job Description
ZGF is seeking a creative, curious, and motivated Laboratory Planner/Manager to join our team in our New York City office. We are looking for thoughtful individuals with excellent communication and technical skills and knowledge of laboratory planning and experience in managing laboratory planning and design teams. The position will support the firmwide lab planning effort and the entire architectural team managing the development, execution, and completion of technologically advanced, state-of-the-future laboratory projects.
As a Laboratory Planner/Manager, you will….
- Bring a track-record of success with complex, multi-phase laboratory planning projects.
- Manage lab planning teams from concept design through construction, both as part of larger design teams at ZGF and as a discrete lab planning service.
- Have a deep understanding of various lab typologies, technical requirements, construction standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Be responsible for the effective performance of the Lab Planning Team regarding project quality, schedule, and budget.
- Mentor and manage staff.
- Work collaboratively with others toward creative, effective and efficient design solutions.
- Utilize your knowledge of laboratory design topics while providing support to the architectural and lab planning staff.
- Develop and provide technical planning expertise and leadership for laboratory projects.
- Be involved in programming, design, fit-out planning, major equipment planning, building systems integration, laboratory casework systems design and specification, and construction administration.
- Prepare architectural documents, elevations, sections, details, and specification, and modifying those documents as required.
- Attend, and eventually lead, laboratory planning meetings with design team and clients.
- Participate in professional development training.
- Integrate and advance sustainable design solutions into high-technology facilities.
- Assist in the development of standard laboratory design materials to be used by all ZGF offices.
- Assist in preparation of 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings and models.
- Develop and maintain excellent relationships with existing and potential clients. Participating in selected marketing and business development opportunities.
- Actively seek to expand knowledge in the design and planning of multiple laboratory types.
- Actively participate in educational, social, and professional events, including involvement in industry associations.
- Participate in a culture of excellent external and internal client service.
- Have potential travel to project locations outside of the US.
Qualifications:
- 15+ years of professional experience in the architecture industry.
- 10+ years of experience in laboratory planning and design.
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture or equivalent in education or experience required.
- Demonstrated leadership, management, and communication skills.
- Ability to navigate complex situations requiring diplomacy, interpersonal skills and judgement.
- Ability to perceive the goals of others, help to set priorities on projects and initiatives, and positively motivate individuals within the context of projects and the firm.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships outside the project team and the firm to facilitate project acquisition, facilitate innovation and then validation of project direction.
- Well-rounded, strategic-thinker with an integrated approach to design, management and technical project resolution.
- Demonstrated creativity, passion, and interest in design and planning of laboratories within technical facilities.
- Desire to expand knowledge of general, technical and regulatory concepts and requirements for laboratory design.
- Interest in Science and the advancement of Scientific Research
- Willing to be mentored in laboratory design and able to take on self-directed learning exercises.
- Knowledge of laboratory planning, design, construction documents, construction administration and project construction are required.
- Knowledge or interest in sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
- Anticipating and developing solutions to technical and design problems following established standards.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing; ability to convey laboratory planning needs to designers and other team members. Ability to communicate project design, schedule and financial status to senior management.
- Ability to develop and process fee proposals and contractual agreements for a lab planning services.
- Proficiency in Revit, Adobe Suite, SketchUp and Microsoft
- Comfortable with working in a team environment.
- Well organized and ability to effectively meet deadlines.
Base Salary Range
$150,000/yr - $200,000/yr
