Senior Exhibit Fabricator/Designer
Pay Rate: $50,000 annual salary + DOE
Shift: Full-Time - Medical, Dental, Life, LTD, PTO, 9 company Holiday's, 401K after 1 year of work.
As a member of the team, you will play an important role in creating exhibits at each of the five venues at Thanksgiving Point and will also have the chance to create cool things, like oversized games and backdrops, for big events such as Tulip Festival, Luminaria, and Dino Days.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a leader and role model within the Exhibit Production Department, mentoring, collaborating, advising, and assisting with all aspects of the exhibit creation process.
- Demonstrate extraordinary skill, creativity, and expertise in all aspects of the exhibit production process.
- Fabricate exhibit components, whole exhibits, or groups of exhibits, as assigned, alone or in production team environments, in situations requiring very high levels of fabrication skills, problem solving ability, mature independent judgment, and understanding of the values and goals of the museum and a particular project.
- Fabricate exhibits, drawing on a broad range of demonstrated skills.
- Develop ideas for physical interactive experiences that demonstrate relevant exhibit concepts and phenomena in safe, engaging, and practical ways.
- In collaboration with exhibit staff and other departments and stakeholders- such as Marketing, Venue Directors, CEO, etc.- work to move preliminary ideas for exhibits through an iterative process of design, building, and testing that culminates in finished exhibits that are safe, engaging, and durable.
- Fabricate and install prototype and final exhibits utilizing knowledge and skills in construction techniques to meet museum goals, meet stated design objectives, budget, and timeline.
- Comply with museum policies, government regulations, and industry best practices for workplace safety.
- Clean, repair, and maintain shop equipment and tools to ensure that they are serviceable and meet safety standards.
- Perform miscellaneous duties related to the fabrication and installation of exhibits: minor electronic, electrical or mechanical work, artifact handling, and computer installation.
- Assume responsibility for the quality of work submitted. Review designs and documents before submitting them to the next review level.
- Work together with Production team and designers to generate 2D and 3D computer models.
- Assist with ordering, loading, and unloading stock and supplies needed to ensure resources and components are available for timely fabrication and construction.
- Safely operate powered industrial trucks, such as forklifts, scissor lifts, aerial lifts, and pallet jacks to facilitate the loading and unloading of exhibit components and materials for the museum.
- Develop and expand fabrication knowledge and skills by participating in training and professional development opportunities.
- Take part in the overall success of the Exhibits Team, our venues, and Thanksgiving Point as a whole.
- Contribute to the design, interpretation, development and creation of cool things, like oversized games and backdrops, for big events such as Tulip Festival, Luminaria, and Dino Days
- Act as a custodian of exhibit content and story throughout the design process.
- Help team members with other exhibit tasks.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
- 3+ years experience in a Museum setting
- Know and have experience with human-centered design or similar methods of developing immersive content for public engagement in a museum or informal learning environment.
- Have a solid understanding of best practices in exhibit fabrication, design process, and safety guidelines.
- Proven skills with the following fabrication and engineering techniques:
- Finish carpentry and cabinet making
- Finishing with paints and other coatings, plastic laminates, and other sheet goods
- Welding and other metal-working processes
- Electronics, microcomputers, sensors, actuators and other motion control devices preferred
- Stellar communication, collaboration, customer service, and professional skills
- Ability to meet deadlines, work efficiently, and be a team player
- Focuses on providing a best-in-class visitor experience through work outcomes by meeting personal and organizational work objectives.
- Organized, reliable, punctual, and great attention to detail
- Basic computer skills
- Physical abilities will need to include: standing, bending, lifting, twisting, manipulating small objects
- Pass a background check
