The Senior Director, Engineering is responsible for the supervision and technical support for engineering within Blue Ridge Power. Areas of supervision include Engineering Project Management, Substation Design, Relay Design, SCADA, Automation, and Performance Engineering. The Senior Director, Engineering will report to the Senior Vice President, Engineering. The Senior Director, Engineering will act as a leader of the Engineering Department and fulfill the design requirements for building utility scale solar plants throughout the continental US. The Senior Director, Engineering is responsible for review of owner requirements, scheduling, employee relations, standardization, and best practices for the completion of Engineering packages for construction.

What You'll Do

  • Lead an engineering team that will perform engineering work for all aspects of utility scale solar project for BRP project locations.
  • Develop relationships with industry leading Engineering Firms to provide engineering product for BRP projects to fulfill the requirements of our owners' projects.
  • Develop, train, and promote good practices across the BRP team to fulfill the company, project, and department goals.
  • Maintain a safety culture and bring industry leading practices to the organization.
  • Work with team to plans, coordinate, assign, and schedule engineering work tasks including project scope development, cost estimating, proposal development, engineering documentation, and executing the work with our third-party engineering firms.
  • Develop and own department goals to move BRP forward into a top-tier EPC contractor.
  • Develop standards, checklists, and engineering practices that are benchmarked to industry accepted standards.
  • Develop relationships with other departments and work to collaborate with each team to bring engineering needs back to the organization.
  • Develop benchmarking practices for engineering work products and deliverables.
  • Build a training and progression plan to detail BRP new employees and progresses them through the organization to develop skillsets and knowledge to promote staff.
  • Knowledge of engineering work product in SCADA, Relay Design, Substation Design, and Performance Engineering
  • Works with other department efforts in the development and implementation of standards for equipment, material, design, and construction requirements for transmission substations.
  • Provides input to yearly budget development related to engineering staff, software, and test equipment procurement for BRP.
  • Provides input into project estimates with BRP estimators for engineering activities for projects.
  • Aids in cost variance analysis post project completion to improve estimates.
  • Coaches, mentors, performs performance reviews, and guides training/staff development.
  • Interviews and evaluates candidates for employment and makes hiring recommendations.
  • Approves expense statement and office leave requests.
  • Actively participates in industry forums, conferences, and other company initiatives to support BRP in its mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Must-Haves

  • Minimum of 10-15 years of directly related electric utility, EPC, or engineering experience with 5 years of leadership in engineering activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric system components and related communications and protection functions.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and developing employees in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze performance, process improvements, and standardization activities.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable commercial agility; ability to reorder critical commissioning activities based on new commercial requirements, under tight deadlines and sometimes changing requirements.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.

Nice-to-Haves

  • PE License
  • Previous experience within utility industry or experience in the solar engineering space

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering.

Working Environment and Physical Demand

  • Travel up to 25%.
  • Position works in an office environment.
  • Position has opportunity to be remote.
  • Preferably a candidate near our office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC.
  • Must be able to sit/stand at a desk and utilize a computer, for extended periods of time.
  • May require lifting/carrying items up to 30 pounds.
