Johnson & Johnson Innovation is recruiting for a Senior Counsel, located in New Brunswick, NJ.

This position is for an attorney within the Johnson & Johnson Law Department. This individual will support Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJI) generally and support the legal needs of the JJI and JLABS organization and primarily advise JLABS leadership. JLABS is a global life science network for innovation, providing startups with access to capital-efficient lab space and resources, including expertise, community, industry connections and entrepreneurial programs. This position will be a member of Business Development Legal Team and in addition to providing support for JLABS, the successful applicant will also be asked to provide general legal support for JJI and may be asked to support strategic deal-making, partnerships and collaborations within the broader enterprise.
Key Responsibilities:

  • This is a sole contributor role and the responsibilities include providing legal support for the global JJI and JLABS team and managing relationships with external suppliers, partners and/or outside counsel.
  • The exact nature of the roles to be played by the selected applicant in conjunction with these activities will depend to a large extent on the individual's qualifications and experience, and the circumstances of any matter.
  • This individual will also be expected to work closely with and be a trusted advisor to the JLABS global leader and leadership team and participate in leadership meetings and negotiations.

  • A law degree is required.
Experience and Skills:
Required:
  • A qualified applicant should have a minimum of 5-8 years of legal experience at a top national or international law firm or in-house legal department of national or international reputation, or a combination, and a proven ability to provide outstanding legal services to a range of senior executives.
  • The ideal applicant must be a self-starter, have strong drafting and negotiation skills, an ability to support several different transactions at the same time, a positive attitude, high emotional intelligence and the ability to work in a highly matrixed but rewarding business environment to effectively partner across legal and other functional areas, such as healthcare compliance and regulatory affairs.
  • Ideally, the successful applicant also has a background in M&A and/or strategic transactions, including, but not limited to exclusive licenses, collaborations, consortia, etc.
  • JLABS also conducts crowd sourcing contests called Quick Fire Challenges and the ideal applicant will have the ability to advise on contest rules and the ability to interface with global law colleagues, including privacy, social media, etc to assist with launching these challenges.
  • In the event JLABS expands its global network, the ideal applicant would have the drafting and negotiation skills to put in place the necessary agreements with a new partner willing to collaborate or partner JLABS.

The base pay range for this position is $137,000-$235,750. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
