Job description

A SENIOR CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TESTING TECHNICIAN performs field observation, testing, sampling and inspection of soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt and structural steel placement and documents findings. Note: All disciplines may not be encountered on every project. Under the direction of more senior technicians or staff professionals and project managers, you will perform routine field and/or laboratory tests and assist in more complex tasks, as required.

Soils - In-place density testing using nuclear density gauge or sand cone methods, Proctor [moisture density], Atterberg limits, and sieve analysis methodology. Aggregates - Sampling and performing sieve analysis. Concrete/Grout/Masonry - Sampling and visual observation, performing air content and slump tests, testing compressive and flexural strength, taking tests of mortar and grout, and obtaining core samples.

Asphalt - Sampling and performing HMA [hot mix asphalt] tests in both field and laboratory settings using nuclear density gauge and core machines in the field; and solvents and sampling at high temperatures in the laboratory. Perform testing and observations on residential, commercial and federal construction projects Prepare daily reports on observation activities Review observation and test data for accuracy and completeness Assist with training and mentoring of junior staff as needed Work with project engineers and clients to ensure that client specifications are followed Daily travel to project sites is expected, with overnight stays when necessary to meet client schedules. Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor Maintain compliance with all company policies and proceduresEDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent minimum, Associates in Construction Management or BS in Earth Sciences a plus.

5+ years of construction materials testing and observation experience At least one ICC certification Experience on large complex commercial construction projects Excellent plan reading skills High attention to detail Excellent written and verbal skills Proficient in MS Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Tablet experience a plus Understanding of construction practices and procedures Valid driver's license required; must have satisfactory driving record in accordance with EMC fleet insurance requirements and be able to pass a background check in order to work on military, industrial, and port sites. Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices Understanding of construction practices and procedures Minimum Certifications ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician, Nuclear Gauge / Radiation Safety & one ICC or NICET Certification Preferred Certifications ICC Soils ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector ICC Structural Masonry Special Inspector ICC Pre-stressed Concrete Special Inspector State DOT certifications NICET certifications PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with OSHA guidelines and directives, in conjunction with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards Must be able to withstand regular exposure to outdoor worksite weather conditions that may be wet and/or humid environments, with extreme cold and/or heat; sites may be moderate to moderately loud Must be able to perform tasks that require long-term standing and/or repetitive motions The chosen candidate will frequently be required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl At times, this position may be working at or on uneven terrain, varying heights, in confined spaces, or supported trenches.
