With the recent establishment of the Topcon Healthcare Innovation Center (THINC), Topcon intends to deepen its collaboration with industry, academia & research, patient groups, and regulatory agencies.
The Senior Biostatistician will be responsible for the statistical rigor of all studies, reports and biomarker explorations at THINC.
This role will be responsible for statistical analyses for study design, study reporting, as well as exploratory analyses and biomarker discovery and engaging with regulatory bodies to facilitate device clearances, as necessary.
The Senior Biostatistician will work with partners across the Topcon ecosystem to innovate and support the portfolio of Topcon medical devices and digital health solutions.
Demands for medical device evidence development addressing patient safety, therapeutic efficacy, quality design and performance, risk management, and benefit-cost determinations are increasing. In accordance with the THINC mission to advance healthcare solutions via data science, this candidate will support THINC’s initiatives to launch methods, tools, and resources aimed at improving patient access to cutting-edge medical device and digital health innovations.
Overall Responsibilities:
  • Statistical analyses required for all THINC driven studies and investigations.
  • Develop statistical methods for the evaluation of large sets of medical data.
  • Conduct tests or investigations pertaining to development of new data collection, curation, and analysis methods and investigate possible application of results.
  • Support data science team to develop data-driven innovations that take full advantage of large collections of images and data from Topcon ophthalmic devices as well as relevant meta data, and may include both structured and unstructured information, including 3D image data from a variety of systems in a wide range of formats.
  • Work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
  • Exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criterion for obtaining results.
Detailed Responsibilities:
  • Perform sample size calculations for THINC studies, and other studies as requested.
  • Perform statistical analyses for THINC studies and partner studies.
  • Run exploratory analyses on data in the THINC repository to generate metadata to facilitate biomarker discovery.
  • Work with Data Curation lead to identify statistical methods to clean data.
  • Work with Data and Clinical scientists to apply best in class methods to evaluate algorithms
  • Develop tools for data mining, data quality assessment, data cleaning and data analytics.
  • Develop and document feasibility investigation plans and results.
  • Advise Medical Affairs and the Data Access Committee, evaluating the design of study proposals from external researchers from a statistics perspective.
  • Generate reports, annotated code, and other projects artifacts to document, archive, and communicate your work and outcomes.
  • Author abstracts, posters, and presentations for scientific and clinical conferences.
Education & Experience:
  • BSc or MSc in Biostatistics or Bioinformatics, Data Science or an alternative subject
  • 5 years minimum experience doing biostatistics for medical devices
  • Experience in the ophthalmic industry preferred, and experience with OCT data highly preferred
  • Experience engaging with the FDA in the ophthalmic space highly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, be self-motivated, set priorities, handle multiple tasks and projects with a high degree of efficiency and comfort with ambiguity.
  • Ability to collaborate with product managers and end users to understand requirements and develop innovative tools to meet those requirements.
  • Experience with statistical learning techniques including Support Vector Machines; Regularization Techniques; Boosting, Random Forests
  • Expertise with statistical packages such as Python or R is highly desirable.
  • Expertise with Matlab, IDL, or similar packages is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in using query languages such as SQL.
  • Base Pay:
    Expected Base Pay Range: $80,000 to $135,000 Annualized
    The base pay range included is a projected hiring range for a position, level and potential work location(s) listed. Topcon provides the compensation range that it in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position. This compensation range is based on a full-time schedule.
    Bonus eligible:
    In addition to base pay, compensation for this position includes eligibility for a 5% annual bonus.

For hourly (“non-exempt”) employees, we offer personal paid time off which accrues in accordance with local standards. All paid time off policies are in accordance with or exceeding local law. Employees working at least 30 hours per week are eligible for our Health and Welfare benefit package.
