The Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) provides a unique resource of data and statistical expertise to the scientific community for addressing important issues in hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapies. The Senior Biostatistician participates in the statistical support of observational retrospective research studies and statistical modeling projects within the CIBMTR & Clinical Services department in alignment with NMDP's mission, vision, and strategic plan. This includes support for CIBMTR research projects aligned with NMDP goals. Additionally, this person will contribute to the training of new biostatisticians and will act as a mentor to the team providing guidance on SAS programming skills, statistical methods, and application of analytical techniques. ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Perform statistical duties:

  • Serves as statistician for clinical research studies. Provides project management oversight for research studies to ensure the timely and accurate completion of analyses and submission of studies for publication.
  • Develops study design plans, prepares preliminary study tables to assess study feasibility, identifies final study population, performs descriptive, univariate, and multivariate analyses, interprets statistical analysis results.
  • Prepares and cleans datasets for research studies. Performs statistical analyses and manages research projects utilizing statistical packages (SAS).
  • Assists in the writing of grants and peer-reviewed scientific publications, providing expertise and scientific content regarding the study design, study population, statistical methodology and description of results.
  • Responds to data and analyses requests from external parties through the CIBMTR Information Request Process.
  • Assists database programmers with the creation of new database variables and resolution of database problems. Coordinates with database programmers on guidance for database structures that are appropriate for analysis.
  • Directs clinical research coordinators and other CIBMTR staff in collating data for scientific research studies and resolve data inconsistencies.
  • Builds and sustains collaborative relationships with individuals in different disciplines and serves as statistician and data subject-matter expert for research teams, internal and external committees, and other collaborators.
  • Fulfills requests and projects for datasets and analyses that support the mission of Be the Match and the departments within.

Mentor, review:

  • Serves as mentor and role model to the team. Trains new statisticians on processes, data and statistical methodology used in the CIBMTR research areas.
  • Acts as statistical consultant within our department and to other NMDP departments advising on proper statistical methodology and techniques.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
  • Logistic regression and survival analysis methods.
  • Fundamental statistical concepts and methodologies.
  • Research study design methods, independent problem solving, decision making, and principles, concepts, methods, and standards of statistical analyses.
  • Strong research and analysis skills including an understanding of scientific/therapeutic research in general.
  • Advanced analytical skills, including high-level experience with SAS.

Ability to:

  • Independently develop statistical analysis plans and study designs for plethora of research projects.
  • Independently perform SAS programming and statistical analyses for research projects.
  • Teach and member junior team members.
  • Utilize excellent problem-solving skills, with a positive attitude that allows all problems to be broken into manageable parts and tackled.
  • Employ excellent written and communication skills, including the ability to provide meticulous documentation of processes and organize materials in a transparent manner.
  • Explain statistical concepts to non-statisticians to enhance their understanding of the analytical approach
  • Utilize organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrate basic Microsoft Office computer software and Internet skills.
  • Commit to occasional overnight travel.

Education/Experience:

  • Master's degree in Biostatistics or closely related biomedical field where biostatistical design and analyses comprised the primary course of study and application.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in statistical analysis of data from epidemiological or clinical research studies. PhD education can be substituted for years of experience, where appropriate.

  • Demonstrated success working/collaborating with diverse populations in a role that has focused on improving health equity by working to eliminate health disparities and/or addressing systemic racism.
