The Research Division
The Research Division, headed by the Vice President for Research and Innovation, enables and advances the university's research priorities as well as research activities of Cornell colleges, schools, and research centers, institutes, and laboratories. This conglomeration of university administration, research services, and the advancement of academia is at the intersection that connects Cornell's Extreme Talent, Radical Collaboration, and Results that Matter.
What is the Center for Technology Licensing?
The Center for Technology Licensing (CTL) at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) is one of Cornell University's technology transfer offices and is responsible for protecting and commercializing Cornell technologies from Cornell's Weill Cornell Medicine and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) campuses. CTL at WCM is an integral part of the newly launched WCM Enterprise Innovation, a fully integrated organization whose mission is to accelerate the best of biomedical innovation to market and translate groundbreaking research into revolutionary care through collaborations and alliances. WCM Enterprise Innovation provides end-to-end support to plant, cultivate, protect, and partner innovative technologies developed by faculty and trainees at WCM and WCM-Q.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Senior Associate, Scientific Scouting will join CTL's business development and licensing team in New York City to deeply engage with WCM faculty and trainees to accelerate the expansion of Enterprise Innovation's pipeline of translational research programs and innovations with commercial potential.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as a key liaison to establish rapport and relationships with faculty and research staff in designated research areas, including:

  • Providing education and guidance to faculty and trainees on who Enterprise Innovation is and how we can support translational research efforts, commercial partnerships, and new venture creation and when to engage.
  • With permission from department heads, attending departmental research-in progress-meetings to keep abreast of arising research in departments, insitutes, and centers across WCM and share relevant information back with Enterprise Innovation counterparts.
  • Helping faculty and researchers identify commercially promising translational research programs in their laboratories and connect them with Enterprise Innovation resources to help advance those programs to be "disclosure ready" inventions, tangible and copyrightable materials to fuel the Enteprise Innovation pipeline.
  • Identifying high-potential faculty and trainees who have not been previously engaged with Enterprise Innovation by review of significant awarded grants and major publications for potentially translational research programs with commercial potential to broaden our base of active innovators
  • Identifying external funding opportunities and open-innovation programs (including corporate, non-profit, and governemental) that can support translational research efforts including maintaining a database of such opportunities, matchmaking opportunity to research program, raising faculty awareness of these opportunities, and managing calls for proposals
  • Supporting BD&L team leads on evaluating technologies in various stages of development for their technical novelty, commercial potential, and IP protection methodology
  • Providing support and guidance to Business Development and Licensing Associates to market technologies and research programs that have been brought into the Enterprise Innovation pipeline to targeted potential licensees and research sponsors/collaborators.
  • Follow industry trends and attend trade shows, engage with commercial and venture business development counterparts and share market insights back with relevant faculty working in these areas.

As needed, support delivery of educational programming and metrics gathering and analysis for the WCM Enterprise Innovation reporting and presentation needs.
Required Qualifications
  • A graduate degree in life sciences, molecular biology, biochemistry, protein chemistry and/or cell biology or healthcare fields.
  • 2-4 years of industry experience in business development/venture and scouting or experience in an academic technology transfer office or corporate research background.
  • Proven ability to interact with a wide range of people in a professional and ethical manner, including faculty, students, business development professionals, and lawyers.
  • Excellent communication skills - listening, presenting, and writing - with proven sensitivity and ability to manage confidential information.
  • Ability to understand cutting edge science from a wide variety of disciplines and being able to identify potential commercial translation opportunities.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications
Forward thinking, team player with prior experience assessing inventions and knowledge of what commercially promising research programs look like from the "industry/investor-side". Eager to learn and expand business development and transactional capabilities with potential growth opportunities for independent portfolio management.
The professional is expected to manage and solve problems in challenging situations with support from senior team members and understand the importance of promptly escalating challenging situations to the Senior Managing Director with full transparency.
