Job Description
This position is for an engineer responsible for the test and validation of core engine components for Caterpillar Large Power Systems Division (LPSD). Tests will encompass a variety of on-engine and bench testing for various core engine systems (including Valvetrain, Rotating Components, Cylinder Pack, Head & Block).
Core Components form the foundation of every great CAT engine. Our team of dedicated professionals ensures the foundation of every LPSD engine can stand the test of time in the toughest environments. Ultimately this enables our customers’ success towards building a better world.
Scope of work includes project planning, hardware procurement, test planning, test/bench setup and execution, data analysis, report generation, and communication of results/solutions – directly impacting the design of new products and processes. This includes advanced component and dynamic testing (vibration, strain, temp, pressure, motion, load & torque measurements), data analysis and durability assessment using NVH software (DATK, LMS). Tests will be conducted in the Tech Center engine labs, Peoria & Tucson proving grounds, 3rd party engine and shake labs, and customer field sites. The engineer will work directly with multiple teams to validate new NPI & NTI engine programs and resolve CPI issues. Limited travel required (up to 15%).
Job Duties
Ensure the planning and delivery of NPI/NTI/CPI testing.
Develop test/instrumentation plan to validate engine components/systems structure durability according to FMEA in collaboration with design and simulation team.
Support core components durability test lab operation, including test scheduling, hardware/test fixture design and procurement, bench setup, and test optimization.
Set up test (accelerometer, strain, temperature, pressure, motion, load & torque) and collect data on customer field or in lab environment utilizing data acquisition systems (eDAQ, LMS …).
Analyze test data (modal analysis, bolt joint fatigue, structure fatigue …) using Caterpillar internal and commercial NVH software (DATK, LMS, MeScope …) and effectively create and communicate test results/recommendations to design teams.
Partner with VPD team to support FEA model correlation and process improvement efforts.
Champion new initiatives to improve efficiency in validation and keep abreast of advancing technology.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Mechanical Engineering curriculum.
1-2 years of relevant engineering experience or a masters or doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering curriculum.
Ability to communicate effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well as customers and suppliers.
Strong technical writing skills for test report creation.
Strong analytical & problem-solving skills.
Top candidates will also have
Master’s degree or doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering curriculum.
Proven experience in structural testing/analysis of reciprocating engines or NVH testing.
Ability to work complex projects with many collaborators and drive action.
Passion to innovate, inspire, and grow professionally.
Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively multitask on multiple engine programs.
