The purpose of a Security Officer is to provide a proactive visible deterrent to the commission of crimes on Hospital property. Further, Officers are required to respond to crimes and disturbances on Hospital property and to take appropriate action. These responses may require Officers to apprehend violent offenders, assist staff with restraining patients and document these occurrences. Security Officers are responsible for the protection and safety of the Hospital, its patients, employees, visitors of all age groups and their property. In the performance of their duties, Officers should always make patient care their priority.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
All Officers are required to possess excellent verbal skills and should be able to relate to people from all walks of life. They must also possess the ability to document occurrences in writing accurately. A minimum of a high school degree or its equivalent is required. Police Officers are required to have successfully completed the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and have arrest powers in Lake County, Indiana. Alternately, applicants for an armed Security Officer position are required to have successfully completed another State's accredited Law Enforcement Academy and possess a card issued by their respective law enforcement agency certifying the applicant has met and complied with the specifications set forth in 18 USC 926B or 18 USC 926C, known as the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, and is authorized to carry a firearm under the provisions stated therein. If actively employed, all armed officers must be in good standing with the law enforcement agency with which they are employed to meet the duty requirements as a Community Hospital Security Department armed officer. If circumstances prevent the armed officer from meeting these requirements his/her employment with the Hospital will be immediately suspended pending further investigation. Further, all armed Officers must successfully qualify with their weapon(s) each year and submit certification of same. Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their legal residence.
