Salary: $18.00 – $21.00 per hour
The primary mission of Daybreak Independent Services Inc (DBIS) is to provide quality service to our individuals in a professional and caring manner. The Security Guard will hold posts on an assigned shift protecting Individuals, visitors, volunteers, employees, and property. Additionally, respond to DBIS emergencies and provide necessary staff support on access control and special activities.
Summary of Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions of Position:
● Patrol DBIS premises to ensure orderliness of the environment, secure restricted areas, and check parking lots, building exits, entrances, fire hoses, stairwells, etc., following established procedures.
● Observe visitors, answer questions and investigate reported losses and suspicious and unusual situations courteously and efficiently. Explain DBIS security policies and procedures to visitors, staff, etc., as necessary.
● Greets individuals, visitors, and employees courteously. Respond to inquiries politely and promptly. Provides directions to visitors as needed.
● Establish and review the identification required to enter the building or property.
● Escort released employees and unruly or unauthorized personnel from DBIS premises tactfully and professionally. It may require restraining skills to subdue violators or emotionally disturbed employees appropriately.
● Protect and safeguard various DBIS properties and installations, as assigned. Operate and monitor multiple security systems (alarms, TV surveillance, etc.). Provide security escorts as directed, i.e., safe corridors to parking garages.
● Prepare and submit relevant incident reports to the supervisor.
● Respond promptly to fire alarms and other emergencies using an established communication system following established procedures. Unlock doors, direct immediate and affected populations to a safe area, and assist the fire brigade or others promptly and efficiently.
● Refer to matters outside the scope of own duties to the appropriate department as necessary, keeping individuals, and others informed.
- Detain law violators and represent the DBIS in legal cases as necessary.
- Assist with compliance with the company's local, state, and federal safety directives.
- Report safety issues, like fire hazards, vandalism, and suspicious or criminal activity.
- Keep an eye on the entrance and exit to prevent theft and ensure workplace security.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Education & Experience:
● High School Diploma or the equivalent
● Emotional intelligence and good character judgment
● Verbal, listening, and written communication skills
● Willingness to learn and enforce safety procedures
● Physically able to lift to 50 pounds, stand or sit for long periods, and detain an individual if necessary.
● Security guard training is a plus.
● Strong communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills.
Additionally, we ask that Security Guards have skills in behavior management, the types of protocols appropriate in a day Habilitation setting, and a willingness to modify or learn new behavior management skills to accommodate and enhance their experience in the program.

Since then, Daybreak has expanded its mission to multiple locations adding both people and additional services. DBIS Serves hundreds of New Yorkers living with developmental disabilities.
Partnerships with local businesses like Stew Leonard, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls have allowed the vision to grow exponentially. In addition, taking on residential programs has allowed us to serve those that need round-the-clock supervision.
It's only the beginning. As we change lives every day, we change in the process. So the work continues, and we look forward to what lies ahead.
