Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the various Building Maintenance trades after normal school hours.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
• Employees of this class will work after school hours, in a relatively unsupervised environment, performing general repair of buildings.
• Employees of this class must be motivated and self-driven and possess exceptional decision-making abilities.
• Perform journey level work in the maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings or in fabricating and repairing a variety of general articles and equipment.
• Scope of work includes the installation, renovation or repairs of classrooms, school buildings, and related facilities.
• Work is performed under minimal supervision and in varying weather conditions, often at moderate heights utilizing ladders and under established and enforced safety conditions and at times requires continuous heavy physical activity.
• Frequently lift and work above the head.
• All work is reviewed by General Building Maintenance Supervision and Division Management in progress and upon completion for adherence to established maintenance standards.
Illustrative Examples of Work
• Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
• Responsible for keeping service truck organized, clean and stocked with parts, supplies and tools.
• Picks up parts and supplies from vendors.
• Performs routine cleaning tasks in the work areas.
• Repairs all interior and exterior structural features of classrooms and other educational areas of school buildings and support facilities such as ceiling systems, wall systems, flooring systems, and etc.
• Assembles, installs, and repairs a large variety of classroom and school equipment and furniture.
• Performs basic flooring repair such as VCT, LVT, ceramic tile, and etc.
• Performs minor electrical repairs such as light bulbs, lighting lenses covers, faceplates, and etc.
• Performs minor plumbing repair such as caulking fixtures, toilet seat replacements, flush valve replacement, resealing toilet flanges, faucet repairs, and etc.
• Repairs and/or paints wall and ceiling systems in need of basic repair.
• Clear snow from driveways, parking lots, and sidewalks.
• Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Journey-level knowledge of:
• Principles and techniques of the various Building Maintenance trades.
• Methods, tools, parts, and equipment used in the various Building Maintenance trades.
• Occupational hazards and related safety precautions in areas assigned to work.
• Schematic drawings and service manuals.
• Ability to successfully complete a mandatory skill-based training program within allowed time period.
• Ability to detect by inspection broken or worn parts.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to operate fleet vehicles safely.
• Ability to climb step ladders, extension ladders and catwalks
• Ability to maintain accurate written and electronic records.
• Ability to process assigned work orders in a computerized work order system.
• Ability to exercise the physical strength and agility necessary to perform job tasks, with a minimum of 50 lbs. lifting and carrying capacity and occasional 75 lb. lifting capacity.
• Ability to demonstrate initiative to work primarily unsupervised with a team of other technicians.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and school personnel.
• Ability to report to the Supervisor and perform related tasks and duties as required.
• Position requires the ability to work occasional scheduled overtime, and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to after-hours emergencies, which may include weekends and holidays
Desirable Education and Experience
• Graduation from High School or equivalent education.
• Course work in a technical trade such as Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, or etc. and four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment screening.
Pay Grade LC - Full-Time - 12 Months - Minimum Monthly Salary $2,739.00
