Summary
This is general parks maintenance entry level work involving the maintenance of grounds, mowing/trimming grass, painting, field grooming and related duties.
Work involves responsibility for safe and effective use of tools and equipment in park maintenance. Duties include using hand tools and the ability to work on small ladder. This position also has the responsibility for making basic laboring decisions in accordance with established procedures. This work requires that the employee have some knowledge, skill and ability in manual laboring, safety, and equipment operations.
Works under the immediate supervision of a Park Maintainer 2, Crew Leader and ultimately the Parks Supervisor.
Duties
Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures. Operates park maintenance equipment and machinery such as lawn mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, chain saws, various hand and power tools.
Uses hand and light power tools to mow grass, clear snow, dig soil, clear brush, trim bushes in landscaped areas, rake leaves and debris, install signs and perform related parks maintenance work including natural areas and open space.
Assists in maintaining athletic fields, maintaining swimming pools, cleaning and maintaining buildings and facilities including comfort stations, picks up trash, operates leaf blower, sprayer, weedwhacker and related equipment used in facilities, grounds and equipment maintenance.
Assists higher level maintainers in semi-skilled and skilled parks maintenance tasks through light and heavy labor.
Responsible for the caring, trimming and removal of invasive saplings, undergrowth and plant material.
Assists in the development of trail systems and maintenance of existing trails.
Performs labor involved with snow removal operations and assist other departments in storm emergencies.
Operates riding mower equipment in parks, as assigned.
Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection of them prior to use, cleans after use and reports damage or breakage to Crew Leader.
Moves bleachers, benches, park and playground equipment and other heavy objects.
Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or be age 15 and currently enrolled in a Vocational/Technical School that is eligible to participate in a Co-Op program that provides both liability and Workers Compensation coverage for Co-Op students. Proof of enrollment and insurance coverage will be required.
Valid Class C Driver's License preferred.
Good knowledge of the practices and procedures of parks maintenance and the management of natural areas including knowledge of tree species, ground cover and invasive plant identification.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor safely, effectively and efficiently for prolonged periods often under adverse climactic conditions.
Good knowledge of current proper pruning practices and ability to work with and in the vicinity of biting and stinging insects and naturally occurring allergens.
Good knowledge of athletic field maintenance.
Some knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in parks and grounds maintenance.
Good skill in the use and maintenance of hand tools, power equipment and knowledge of methods in grounds and facilities maintenance.
Good ability to follow oral instructions and to learn Township procedures.
Good ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.
Good ability to work independently.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for a minimum of 1 Up to 8 hours, walk for a minimum of 1 Up to 8 hours and sit and drive for a minimum of 1 Up to 8 hours per workday. In severe weather conditions, ability to sit, drive, stand and walk for Up to 16 hours.
Ability to squat, crawl, climb, reach above shoulder level, crouch and kneel for Up to 35% of the workday.
Ability to lift and carry Up to 50 pounds of tools, equipment and materials Up to 68% of the workday and lift and carry Up to 100 pounds of tools, equipment and materials Up to 35% of the workday.
Ability to use both feet for operating foot controls of equipment.
Ability to use both hands for simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulating of equipment, objects and tools.
Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions at various unprotected heights.
Ability to perform job functions using safety precautions where moving machinery may be present.
Ability to perform job functions in all types of weather and temperatures.
Ability to drive an automobile/tractor type equipment.
