Located in Villanova, PA, Stoneleigh: a natural garden is a 42-acre former private estate that opened as the Philadelphia area’s newest public garden in May of 2018. The Seasonal Horticulturist’s primary role is to assist in the installation, design and maintenance of garden landscapes and natural areas. They will also be required to perform, as needed, all additional tasks necessary for the continued development of Stoneleigh.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist horticulturists with general gardening duties including planting, watering, weeding, mulching, pruning, and other landscape project tasks as assigned
- Operate heavy equipment including tractors, mini excavators, and power tools such as hedge trimmers, blowers, string trimmers and other landscape maintenance equipment.
- Assist with leading volunteer days, public events, tours, educational programs, and membership activities as necessary.
- Assist with nursery production, propagation, and plant care.
- Monitor and inspect plants for health deficiencies and problems, ascertain proper corrective measures and apply appropriate pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
- Work with contractors, consultants, interns, and volunteers, as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Must possess general horticulture and gardening or strong desire to learn more about horticulture.
- Must be passionate about the natural world and native plants.
- Exhibit flexibility when dealing with changes in work plans.
- Must be comfortable engaging with diverse audiences.
- Highlymotivated, responsible, reliable, and dependable.
- Must carry out tasks in a professional manner and have an aptitude for injecting positive energy and good humor into the workday.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Must have valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and a good driving record.
- Successfully pass a background check.
- Must be able to walk, stand, bend, squat on uneven terrain; must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds and push up to 50 pounds.
- Must be comfortable working from a ladder, a lift, or other high places.
- Must be prepared to work outdoors under all conditions, including heat, cold, and with occasional exposure to poison ivy, biting, stinging insects, etc.
- Must be willing to work weekends on a rotational basis as well as some evenings and holidays.
