Job description

The Position
Roche Diagnostics acquired Stratos Genomics (SBX Nanopore Sequencing) in 2020 for its novel Sequencing by eXpansion (SBX™) technology. SBX™ uses unique applications from chemistry, biochemistry, electrochemistry, and protein engineering to sequence DNA by nanopore in rapid time with high accuracy and at a low cost. The successful candidate will join the SBX Detection Sequencing department to further develop our sequencing technology through research and development efforts while guiding a team of direct reports.
The Sequencing team is devoted to developing our high throughput, low-cost DNA sequencing approach into an industry disrupting product that will facilitate the care that patients need. We are looking for a motivated scientist with management background to grow and lead a team of researchers striving towards elevating performance of our complex sequencing system. This position will require taking a whole system approach that addresses the interconnected dynamics of nanopore structure, Xpandomer design, sequencing conditions, fluidics, redox reactions, and surface chemistries. Please include a cover letter outlining why you want to work with us, your specific interest in our technology, and how you would contribute to our success.
Responsibilities:
  • After mastering execution of our current work processes and established SOPs, continue to advance research and development efforts on our multifaceted nanopore-based sequencing platform.
  • Use technical and theoretical understanding to propose detailed plans for executing high quality and complex laboratory experiments while keeping processes well organized and documented.
  • Communicate actively, effectively, and promptly with supervisor on project status, significant findings, data analysis summaries, critical problem areas, and pathways forward.
  • Manage, mentor, and train direct reports to comply with expectations while fostering an environment that develops new and existing skills to support departmental goals.
  • Support management decisions and goals in a positive, professional manner. Embrace priorities and responsibilities set forth by management.
  • Collaboratively work with manager and colleagues to explore alternative approaches to solve problems and find solutions. Make data-driven recommendations to solve problems with feasible solutions.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data using various data analysis software (e.g., Excel, Python) and/or applying quantitative methods. Summarize experimental results with a keen observational eye to anomalies, deviations, and new paths of inquiry. Prepare pithy data reviews, conclusions, and actionary plans for manager.
  • Use technical writing/presentation skills to produce comprehensive & concise reports/documents in a timely manner. When needed, effectively present findings to team members and senior management.
  • Maintain databases to track performance, project progress, and experimental findings.
  • Require minimal guidance to manage tasks and work time responsibly. Take personal accountability to deliver on assigned tasks promptly. Independently manage own work flow.
  • Maintain electronic lab notebook documentation. Ensure that all experimental methods and results are recorded timely, accurately, consistently, and according to established formats.
  • Participate in routine lab maintenance, lab safety, ISO, and QSR implementation.
  • Maintain performance of and troubleshoot issues encountered while working on various instruments.
  • Maintain clean and organized personal and communal lab spaces.
  • Perform work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA). Make recommendations and act as appropriate to keep the lab a safe environment for all team members, including regular housekeeping tasks.
  • Adhere to Roche Diagnostics Seattle policies and complete any additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate, Master's or Bachelor's degree in Molecular biology, Protein Engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemistry or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work-experience
  • 5 years related research & development experience
  • 2 years management experience
  • Ability to execute relevant laboratory experimentation with appropriate controls.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve problems encountered in experimental procedures.
  • Mastery of basic laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting, sterile technique, solution preparation, etc.).
  • Comfortable with standard molecular biology techniques, mutagenesis, protein expression/purification
  • Very good organization skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Advanced comfort with Google Docs & Microsoft office suite

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working with nanopores or sequencing technologies.
  • Experience with nanopore or transmembrane protein expression/purification
  • Experience with AKTA FPL
  • Experience with coding or programming applications (e.g., Python, Matlab, etc.).
  • Experience with AKTA Unicorn, Pyml, and Geneious
