Company Profile:

Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary

Responsible for planning sampling for field investigations for the RCRA program, which include Technical Area 21, Aggregate Area/contaminated soils, and Material Disposal Area teams. Environmental Scientists will work closely with all facets of the company to help ensure safe, efficient, and quality work throughout the company.

Major Duties & Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Serves as the technical subject matter expert for the sampling of environmental projects.
  • Serves as technical team lead for a project working with the Project Manager, the Field Execution Team Lead, and the subcontractors.
  • Evaluate nature and extent of chemicals of potential concern in Data Action Summary Reports and Investigation Reports.
  • Evaluate data for human health and ecological risk assessments.
  • Write yearly Progress Reports for each Aggregate Area sampling campaign.
  • Review investigation work plans and propose additional sampling to create better, more efficient work documents.
  • Write investigation work plans.
  • Conduct peer review of investigation work plans, investigation reports, data action summary reports, corrective measures plans and reports.
  • Knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following: mapping software, statistical software, and Code of Federal Regulations part 835, Occupational Radiation Protection.
  • Ability to write standard operating procedures.
  • Evaluate reports and plans for quality and consistency.
  • Interface with other N3B groups as necessary to support Consent Order metric exercises and updates.
  • Practice and enforce safe work techniques, safety policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Essential Functions (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Experience in the environmental, radiation, and/or geotechnical industries.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Desire and interest in supporting field and office teams and promoting a culture where quality work is a priority.
  • Skill and ability to perform complex professional tasks and to analyze and develop innovative solutions to problems.
  • Ability to recommend approaches for new and improved processes.
  • Ability to work with broad objectives, with latitude to determine the best way to accomplish tasks.

  • Ability to train and mentor more junior staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite of applications (word, excel, etc.)

Education and Experience Required/Level Descriptions:

Duties may vary based on the classification level as follows:

Level 1: Bachelors’ degree in Environmental, Geology, Geochemistry/Hydrology, Biology, Toxicology, or other appropriate related technical discipline with a minimum of 1 year of relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable. Education Equivalency is 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college. Relevancy is determined via review by the hiring manager.

Level 2: Bachelors’ degree in Environmental, Geology, Geochemistry/Hydrology, Biology, Toxicology, or other appropriate related technical discipline with a minimum of two years’ of relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable. Education Equivalency is 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college. Relevancy is determined via review by the hiring manager.

Level 3: Bachelors’ degree in Environmental, Geology, Geochemistry/Hydrology, Biology, Toxicology, or other appropriate related technical discipline with a minimum of five years’ of relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable. Education Equivalency is 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college. Relevancy is determined via review by the hiring manager.

Level 4: Bachelors’ degree in Environmental, Geology, Geochemistry/Hydrology, Biology, Toxicology, or other appropriate related technical discipline with a minimum of nine years’ of relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable. Education Equivalency is 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college. Relevancy is determined via review by the hiring manager.

Level 5: Bachelors’ degree in Environmental, Geology, Geochemistry/Hydrology, Biology, Toxicology, or other appropriate related technical discipline with a minimum of fourteen years’ of relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable. Education Equivalency is 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college. Relevancy is determined via review by the hiring manager.

Business Associations:

Level 1: Contacts are primarily with immediate supervisor, project leaders, and other professionals in the section or group.

Level 2: Primarily internal company contacts. Infrequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts on routine matters.

Level 3: Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.

Level 4: Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

Level 5: Serves as organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs. Acts as advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications.

Impact:

Level 1: Contributes to completion of routine technical tasks. Failure to achieve results can normally be overcome without serious effect on schedules and programs.

Level 2: Contributes to completion of milestones associated with specific projects. Failure to achieve results or erroneous decisions or recommendations may cause delays in program schedules and may result in allocation of additional resources.

Level 3: Contributes to completion of specific programs and projects. Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in serious program delays and considerable expenditure of resources.

Level 4: Guides the successful completion of major programs and may function in a project leadership role. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives.

Level 5: Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into a final product. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve critical organizational objectives and affect image of organization’s technological capability.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated.
