What You Will Do
The High Performance Computing (HPC) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory provides scientific computing resources consisting of some of the largest and most innovative HPC systems in the world. The High Performance Computing (HPC) Storage Team within the HPC Infrastructure Group (HPC-INF) provides vanguard production support, testing, design and maintenance for over 200PB of storage across more than 10 file systems, and deployment support for future systems. This role requires strong communication skills, comprehensive troubleshooting, and analytical skills partnered with a strong Linux foundation. Team member duties include: designing, building, and maintaining world-class data movement and storage systems; evaluating and testing new technology and solutions; diagnosing, solving issues that encompass complete set of HPC components ranging from client to storage disks; interacting with vendors; and communicating and collaborating with other groups, teams, projects and sites.
This position is full-time and is located at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. A hybrid schedule is available that requires 60% onsite presence. The selected candidate will participate in a regularly scheduled on-call rotation in support of 24/7 production systems. In addition, some non-standard working hours may occasionally be required.
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Scientist 2 $99,200 - $164,100
  • Work both independently and collaboratively with other team members after receiving initial direction and requirements from technical project leads.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose root cause of system failures, and isolate the components / failure scenarios in a Linux environment.
  • Work with team members to make modifications and additions to existing systems, code, and methods.
  • Work with the team to bring up new hardware and test functionality, including deep multi-system problem isolation and resolution. Often in collaboration with administrators of other HPC subsystems.
  • Work with team members to document, design, and implement new ideas and approaches for newer architectures, and improve those for existing ones.

Scientist 3 $119,200 - $201,100
In addition to the duties outlined above, a successful Scientist 3 candidate will be required to:
  • As a technical leader/subject matter expert, lead troubleshooting efforts, propose and implement solutions. Often involves working across HPC teams.
  • Lead design and implementation of new HPC Storage and Data Management deployments.
  • Enhance technical and professional expertise of other staff and students through active mentoring and training activities.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Extensive experience building, configuring, and administering, production Linux computer / storage systems.
  • Practical experience scripting in Bash, Perl, Python, or similar languages.
  • Knowledge of system administration and configuration management best practices.
  • Experience deploying and maintaining system and storage hardware.
  • Working knowledge of networking concepts and practices.

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Broad demonstrated knowledge of production system management topics, including networking, programming, file systems, operating systems, and configuration management with depth in one or more areas.
  • Experience with common system level programming languages, such as C, C++, and Go.
  • Experience with popular build environments, such as Autotools and CMake.
  • Experience maintaining and enhancing software systems deployed into production.
  • Ability to lead and mentor teams, students, or junior team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, design, and lead projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate competing HPC subsystem technologies

Education/Experience at lower level:
Position requires a bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level:
Position requires a master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge with container management, Kubernetes, Docker, OpenShift.
  • Knowledge of file systems such as ZFS, EXT, XFS.
  • Knowledge of distributed file systems, and advanced file system concepts such as metadata organization, data protection strategies, and input/output semantics.
  • Knowledge of relevant storage system protocols and hardware, including NVMe-based storage devices and computational storage devices.
  • Experience with Git, or other revision control systems such as RCS or Subversion.

Work Location:
This position will be in Los Alamos, NM, with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite, partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
