Description

Perform technical work and manage all aspects of a supporting laboratory stockroom. Order, receive, maintain and issue laboratory supplies and equipment. Prepare materials and equipment for laboratory courses. Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer for Science Laboratories.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Order, receive and maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment, chemicals and living materials sufficient to meet instructional needs. Maintain inventory, maintenance and repair records. Schedule routine equipment maintenance.
  • Prepare materials for use in lab environment.
  • Review lab curriculum to ensure necessary materials can be constructed, prepare or purchased in a timely manner.
  • Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer. Create and implement related safety training, procedures and hazardous waste management plan. Maintain chemical inventory, assign hazard rating, and chemical storage location. Meet with science department faculty members as needed to update or implement additions or revisions to the Chemical Hygiene Plan to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Provide technical assistance to students on independent research projects.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationship with College staff, other organizations, and the public.
  • Implement and follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas.

Auxiliary Job Functions:
Provide assistance to other college personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
Qualifications

  • Minimum Requirements:
    Broad knowledge of life, physical or environmental sciences, specifically chemistry, biology, microbiology, botany and zoology.
  • Thorough knowledge of safe lab procedures, hazardous waste management, and proper handling methods of associated materials.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database applications software.
  • Equivalent to a four year university degree in science, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.

Physical Demands of the Position:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 5 pounds on a regular basis such as incubators, ovens, microscopes, spectrometers, etc., and may infrequently require moving materials weighing up to 15 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while preparing lab supplies and operating equipment such as computer keyboard, microscopes, spectroscopes, balances, meters, etc.

Working Conditions:
Work occurs in a Science Laboratory environment and requires use of protective gear due to exposure to chemicals
Supervisor Responsibilities:
Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.
Supervision Received:
Works under the general supervision of the Science Department Chair.
