The Virginia Department of Education, Office of School Nutrition Programs (VDOE-SNP) is seeking a knowledgeable team player to join the team as the Farm to School Specialist. The VDOE-SNP is at an exciting period in its efforts to transform school and child Nutrition Programs. This position will help lead statewide efforts to improve school meals, increase the connections between locally grown food and School Nutrition Programs, and build sustainable Farm to School initiatives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, building and coordinating the Virginia Farm to School Network, working alongside school and child Nutrition Programs to increase local food purchases, and developing and linking Virginia Farm to School stakeholders to critical resources and trainings. This is an exciting opportunity to make an impact on school and child Nutrition Programs, regional producers, and students throughout the commonwealth. This position will work alongside the Lead Farm to School Specialist and be a part of a fast-paced, goal-oriented team that thinks outside the box.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic knowledge of the administration and management of school/child Nutrition Programs and the federal and state laws governing them.
Knowledge of local food systems.
Knowledge of community, regional, state, and federal Farm to School resources.
Knowledge of food system-related network and coalition building.
Knowledge of school/child Nutrition Program procurement practices and regulations.
Excellent skills in written and oral communication.
Computer skills in data base management, spreadsheet applications, word processing, presentation software, Internet, and web-based systems.
Skills in researching, collecting, organizing, and managing data and report writing.
Demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, and conduct training programs for professionals, state agency staff, local school divisions, and stakeholders.
Demonstrate the ability to provide professional leadership and technical assistance to School divisions and stakeholders related to School/child Nutrition Programs, Farm to School, and procurement management.
Demonstrate the ability to effectively and competently manage multiple assignments simultaneously and meet critical deadlines.
Demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with a variety of individuals from a wide range of organizations and establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.
Professional experience in Farm to School program work. Knowledge of school/child Nutrition Programs and public agencies. Experience in adult learning and training delivery models.

Additional Considerations

Baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in nutrition, agriculture, public health, or similar field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master's Degree or equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work is preferred.
