The Mahi'ai Kalo (Taro Farmer) will support the production of kalo and other crops grown in the lo`i or wetland system. The responsibilities include but are not limited to the cultivation and management of existing kalo cultivation areas, restoring former growing areas, and maintaining general landscape of the broader area. The objective of this position is to both produce kalo for the market, as well as to improve cultural, agricultural, and educational viability of 'aina here at Kualoa Ranch.
Minimum Qualifications:
1 year of agricultural experience and knowledge of traditional Hawaiian farming systems preferred.
Experience with use, maintenance, and safety of hand and power tools required. Basic interpersonal communications skills. Ability to conduct general record keeping. Ability to develop and execute best management practices as pertains to the cultivation of desired crops. Able to work independently for extended periods of time. Physically fit, able to conduct strenuous fieldwork in weather extremes, which may involve extensive walking or hiking in undeveloped areas. Ability to properly identify species of flora in a field setting with a focus on native crop plants. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and language, sustainability and environment awareness.
