The Yakama Tribal School Nurse will be responsible for contributing significantly to a healthy learning environment, and for the nursing care of Yakama Nation Tribal School students. The School Nurse's responsibilities will include teaching classes on nutrition and health and developing healthcare initiatives for the school. To be successful as a School Nurse, the candidate must be knowledgeable in principles and practices underlying professional nursing, principles of public health, and remain up to date with current trends in the specialized field of school health.
Examples of Work Performed:
Utilizing existing resources to provide appropriate healthcare to students and staff.
Assessing the status of student immunization documentation, when necessary.
Promoting an optimal level of wellness among students by providing primary prevention healthcare, such as immunizations and health education to students individually and in the classroom setting.
Developing and implementing developmentally appropriate secondary prevention measures through school health screenings, including but not limited to vision, hearing, oral health, and others.
Developing and implementing health plans for students with specific health needs i.e., oral health screening.
Planning and implementing school health management protocols and procedures, especially for emergency situations.
Providing referrals to parents, for intervention and remediation of abnormal or worrying health conditions affecting students.
Providing ongoing health counseling to students, parents, and staff.
Completing medical paperwork, when necessary.

Ability to work effectively with culturally and diverse individuals and groups.
Ability to work and relate effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
Ability to work effectively with local and state level advisory groups and boards.
Exceptionally high commitment to task accomplishment and flexibility in work hours.
Knowledge of current health issues affecting both rural and urban communities and public schools.
Knowledge of current, evidence-based School Nurse practices.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and objectivity.
Ability to interpret and apply complex school and health regulations.
Minimum Requirements:
Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
Current WA State Registered Nurse license.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Meticulous attention to detail.
Attention to cultural and the traditional norms of Yakama people and its students.
A disposition of compassion and care toward students and their families.
Must possess a current First Aid/CPR card.
Required to complete and pass a background and fingerprint check in accordance to the Yakama Nation Tribal School policy.
Must have no history of child abuse or neglect.
Must have no history of drug or alcohol abuse.
Must pass a pre-employment background check.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
Preferred Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
ESA School Nurse Certification through the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
