The Primary Responsibility of a School Library Media Specialist is to create a flexible library and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth.
Term of Employment: 174 days
Responsible to: Building Administrator
Qualifications: Current valid Missouri Certification
The School Library Media Specialist's Performance Responsibilities include:
- Operate Media Center
- Operates and supervises the district's media centers.
- Administers the LMC budget.
- Maintains a comprehensive system for cataloging all media center materials.
- Catalogs, classifies and processes material in a timely manner.
- Establishes, maintains and promotes a LMC environment that encourages participation and use of the LMC by students and staff.
- Evaluates the media center collection, materials, resources, equipment and facilities on an annual basis using the Standards for Missouri School Library Media Centers.
- Participates in long range planning for the LMC.
- Promotes and maintains appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities.
- Complies with district rules, regulations and policies.
- Updates copyright guidelines to be presented to teachers as needed.
- Participates in an annual LMC evaluation to board.
- Member of Comprehensive School Improvement Plan Committee.
- Develops district Library Media center policy and procedures handbook.
2. Resource Maintenance
- Solicits input from faculty and students in the selection of LMC resources.
- Weeds obsolete and worn materials from the collections and selects appropriate replacements.
- Evaluates, selects and requisitions new media center materials.
- Provides culturally diverse resources for students and staff use.
- Arranges and frequently changes displays and exhibits of books and resource materials likely to be of interest to LMC users.
- Maintains a balanced media center collection, including adequate resources in the areas indicated by the Standards for Missouri School Library Media Centers.
- Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials available to supplement the instructional program.
2. Teaching of Library/ Research Skills
- Provides materials and instruction in research skills and the effective use of library resources.
- Works with teachers in planning assignments likely to lead to extended use of the media center facilities.
- In partnership with the faculty, teaches information literacy skills or integrates these skills across the curriculum as outlined in the board adopted curriculum guide.
- Assists teachers in integrating information literacy across the curriculum.
- At the invitation of the teacher, presents and discusses material with classes studying a particular topic.
- Helps students develop skills in using reference materials and LMC resources independently in planned assignments.
- Assists all student populations and faculty as requested with individual and classroom projects.
- Collaborates and participates in curriculum study and curriculum writing teams to integrate media resources into the curriculum at the building and district level.
- Keeps up-to-date with new technologies, and is available to teach and assist students and teachers in the use of the technology.
- Other duties/responsibilities deemed necessary may be assigned.
- Creates an environment for learning .
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self selected growth activities,
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids.
- Maintains required inventory records.
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
- Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the district's testing program.
- Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participates in faculty meetings, committees, and sponsorship of student activities.
- Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.
- Complies with good safety practices.Complies with all district rules, regulations, and policies.
