JOB SUMMARY:
The Elementary School Counselor assists each student in developing the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to provides comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling services. Working collaboratively with other school staff members and parents, the Elementary School Counselor advocates for the student. They assist students in understanding the school and its environment, understanding themselves and their relationships with others, understanding their strengths and needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Establish high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
• Collect, organize, and analyze information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources, to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics. Use the data to assist the student as necessary.
• Serve on the school intervention team and participates in IEP meetings.
• Coordinate the Academic Assistance program according to State and District guidelines.
• Provide counseling for students' learning, social, emotional needs and styles, using various techniques.
• Counsel individual students to resolve educational, personal, emotional, and social needs and other areas of concern identified by the counselor, student, parents, teachers, administrators, or others associated with the student.
• Provide counseling services, including crisis intervention, to students experiencing difficulties with student growth and performance, referring students to other resources and agencies as needed. Ensure that the Principal is aware of such referrals
.• Provide social-emotional counseling in disciplinary behaviors, including suspensions, attendance, and chronic absenteeism.

• Assist students and parents in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities by interpreting individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.
• Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other professional staff members, providing information and assistance where needed for the ultimate benefit of students.
• Work closely with, involve parents in resolving school-related problems.
• Assist in the planning, organization, and administration of standardized test programs.
• Provide orientation and information on school procedures, curriculum, and extracurricular opportunities for new students.
• Arrange for enrollment in summer school or credit recovery programs to make up for noted deficiencies.
• Maintain a professional, clean, neat, organized, and functional office environment.
• Follow the ethical standards for School Counselors set forth by the American School Counselor Association.
• Utilize the resources of the community in developing and expanding counseling services and activities.
• Provide for a smooth transition from middle or ninth-grade school, including orientation programs for students and parents.
• When needed, use school and community resources to assist students and parents in working closely with other school personnel, including the administration, nurse, social worker, learning disabilities teacher, etc.
• Teach developmental guidance using a variety of instructional strategies, materials, and presentation skills.
• Maintain accurate student records, protecting the privacy and confidentiality of information according to school policy and federal and state law.
• Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and other agencies associated with the school.
• Maintain a confidential log of all counseling sessions.
• Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and make appropriate interventions. After each grading period, see which students are doing poorly and conference with them. Work with their teachers and parents to do interventions to help the student make progress.
• Ask principals to refer students with behavioral problems and counsel the student to implement an intervention to stop such behaviors.
• Provide a nurturing, supportive and favorable climate, using positive motivation that encourages student responsibility.
• Establish a professional rapport with students and parents that earns their respect.
• Use excellent written and oral English skills when communicating with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Attend required staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees.
• Immediately notify the Principal and appropriate authorities, as per state law, of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide, or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
• Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiences
• Be able to design and develop a teaching master schedule for the school.
• Write the course guides and conduct the student registration process for the coming year.
• Effectively utilize all student-based information systems.
• Perform any duties within the scope of employment and certifications, as assigned by the Principal or assigned supervisor.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Must have an earned Bachelor's Degree.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid SC Teaching License in one of the following areas:
School Counselor certified by the SC State Department of Education
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students and volunteers.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures and instructional manuals. Ability to design and write professional development plans, reports and data entry procedures. Ability to effectively present professional development and training and respond to questions from groups of educators, trainees, media, administrators and organization members.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems.
Ability to identify student adjustment and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action to parents. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Knowledge in the methods for developing lesson plans and materials, and classroom activities which stimulate learning. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and district employees. Ability to implement a flexible work schedule to meet the reporting deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required. Ability to perform duties with a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group.
