Job Description
The Scale Tech is responsible for repairing and maintaining all scales, metal detectors and x-rays in the plant. Will perform the daily scale checks and maintain all portable Carlisle scale carts and Carlisle scale enclosures. Will perform all mechanical maintenance on the rail motion scales on the production floors (Chain sprockets bearings load cells and all electrical parts). Will help maintain all metal detectors in the plant. Will help maintain all the x-rays including all mechanical and electrical on the machines. Will help Maintain all pre price systems. Write and maintain OPLs for the department. Help IT techs when needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.
  • To preform your required tasks on the company's state certified pay scales you will be required to pass the Weights and Measures Registered service exam for the state of Iowa. (Company will pay for license) Will also follow all guidelines stated in NIST Handbook 44.
  • Will also be required to maintain all certified weights in the plant.
  • Will help maintain all weigh price labeling systems in the plant both manual and automated.
  • Will preform periodic scale checks, preform preventive maintenance, and repair equipment while keeping track of job assignments.
  • Will also be required to operate related testing equipment. Scale simulator, Multimeter
  • Will also be required to operate a fork truck or a walkie to prefom scale repairs and calibrations.
  • Will also be required to run a aerial lift.
  • This position will perform necessary repairs and maintenance on plant wide Scaling systems including bench, combo and motion scales, Metal Detectors and X-ray systems. To preform these tasks, you will require a general knowledge of pneumatics, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical. This may also include cutting and welding and basic metal fabrication if directed by supervisor.
  • Other duties such as assisting in the installation of new scales and reconditioning of existing scales.
  • Assist with scheduling, preparation, installation, service parts inventory and maintenance of technical equipment beyond the scope of ordinary maintenance team members such as Scales, Metal Detectors and X-Rays machines.
  • Provides technical guidance to help support production throughput, efficiency, cost reduction and safety improvements.
  • Will also be required to help the IT techs and PLC programmers with projects and basic system functions.

Self-motivated, highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills, Understanding low voltage circuits. Understanding circuit boards and repairing, Ability to perform electrical installations and repair using 480V to 24V. Provides technical support to existing equipment:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma with course work in skilled crafts preferred, or three (3) years of experience using mechanical or other related skills; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management and employees using plant systems.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as safety files, standard operating procedures, operating and maintenance instructions. Must be able to effectively communicate with USDA, production, and management personnel. Bilingual skills a plus.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations. Demonstrated ability to understand basic statistics for process control.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to use computers and all standard programs used by the industry and the ability to learn and effectively use all other computer programs that are or will be made available.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move about the facility. The employee is required to sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel/hold objects; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; speak; hear taste and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cold/hot and/or humid conditions. Will also be exposed to all outdoor elements and dust and odors typically associated with the plant. Will frequently work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, cold/hot temperature and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The work environment includes climate extremes found in all areas of plant operations.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management and may be changed (increased or decreased) by management as required. May be required to work some weekends and be part of an on-call rotation.
