Overview:  

The Utilities Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an Electrical Power Distribution/SCADA Engineer. Our Utilities Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all standard industrial type utilities across the Laboratory ensuring that all utilities are delivered in a safe, reliable, and economical manner to the customer. The success of every research project at ORNL depends on the ability of the Utilities Division to provide these services. This position is in the Electrical Utilities area of the Utilities Division. The successful applicant will provide management of ORNL’s medium voltage electrical distribution supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and technical support for the operation and maintenance of the electrical distribution system.

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Provide management of the Electrical Utilities SCADA system and its components by completing all modifications including design, configuration, and testing of the system ensuring an accurate and reliable system.
  • Maintain an updated displayed SCADA model of ORNL’s power distribution system by integrating field-changes into the system and working directly with the Distribution System Engineer to promote a safe working environment.
  • Exhibit technical proficiency in all aspects of modifications/integrations to the electrical distribution system and its communication network, including the ability to specify and coordinate installation of new equipment such as metering, relays, and PLCs to further expand the SCADA/EEM/PME system.
  • Provide support in establishing the necessary requirements for directing maintenance, modifications, or utility outage activities to preserve safety and environmental controls, and to minimize interruptions or negative impact on customers.
  • Participates in complex-wide performance assessment activities and provides feedback on the effectiveness of corrective actions that are implemented as a result of assessment activities.
  • Interfaces with other engineers and technical support service organizations in performance of work assignments.
  • Promotes frequent communication with customers, craft workers, and other utility staff members.
  • Supports predictive/preventive maintenance programs.
  • Supports integration of worker safety and health and environmental protections into work planning and execution.
  • Supports configuration control management to ensure that systems and associated equipment are operated and maintained effectively and efficiently.
  • Supports proper authorization for work performed in or on Electrical Utilities facilities and systems by others such as construction and service subcontractors.
  • Supports the maintenance of record drawings, project documentation, and regulatory records.
  • Provides engineering overview of all Electrical Utilities’ complex projects.
  • Supports development and implementation of the utilities training program.
  • Supports researchers and projects associated with Electrical Utilities.
  • Supports the revitalization of the ORNL campus by providing facility needs data to long-range planners and facility designers.
  • Performs other roles, as directed by the Complex Facility Manager.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of five years of relevant experience in power distribution and utility SCADA systems.
  • Experience in Utility Electrical Distribution systems
  • An in-depth working knowledge of PLCs, metering, and protection relaying as well as codes/standards( IEEE, NEC, NESC, NFPA) relative to utility distribution systems and utilization equipment
  • A valid Tennessee driver's license or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Schneider PSO 2022 and PME.
  • Experience with SEL, ABB, S&C, Eaton, Schneider, Caterpillar, and G&W devices.
  • Strong experience with SEL RTACs.
  • Experience performing factory acceptance testing (FAT).
  • Experience commissioning devices in the field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively address all levels of Laboratory management.

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
