Yakima Valley College is accepting applications for an innovative Coordinator - Satisfactory Academic Progress & Student Employment - Financial Aid Department. This is a full-time classified position, beginning salary is $3,376 per month for 40 hours per week, with periodic increments up to $4,497, plus a full state benefits package.
Reporting to the Director - Financial Aid, the Coordinator - Satisfactory Academic Progress & Student Employment is located within the financial aid office and provides coordination, financial aid advising, and support services to students who need to work through the process of documenting their extenuating circumstances to regain their eligibility. This position also oversees federal and state Work Study allocations to promote student engagement and retention through employment opportunities throughout the college campus.
The Coordinator carries responsibility for ensuring accountability of funds, tracking outcomes, monitoring budgets and meeting reporting requirements for assigned funding programs. This position supports student success by advising students through Work Study eligibility and professional development, establishing academic plans that consider students remaining eligibility along with academic work needed to complete degree requirements.
The Coordinator requires the ability to use a computer for prolonged periods of time, ability to work in an open office setting and to work with frequent in-person interaction and numerous interruptions; work under pressure, handle multiple tasks and prioritize competing demands. This position requires significant use of professional judgment.
Essential Tasks
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
  • Manages process for evaluating Satisfactory Academic Progress for all current and perspective financial aid applicants.
  • Maintains written policy and process that meets federal, state, and institutional requirements for continued aid eligibility.
  • Manages communications to students, system generated or manual, to inform them of rights, responsibilities, and resources.
  • Exercises professional judgment in evaluating individual student circumstances and establishing parameters of academic plan that will move student into compliance with regulations. Collaborate with Curriculum and Faculty Advisors, Instructors, and Administrators to act in the best interest of students.
  • Manage federal and state Work Study budgets to promote student employment across institution.
  • Report program data to federal and state agencies. Analyze program results for continuous improvement to programs and in support of enrollment, retention, and graduation.
  • Create partnerships with departments across campus to promote increased student employment in areas that will provide student with experience relevant to their field of study to extent practicable.
  • Provides information and technical assistance to program participants, staff, and outside entities regarding program content, policies, activities, and recommends alternative courses of action; promotes the program with outside organizations and resources.
  • Identifies all potential sources of student financial aid and related support resources; Processes applications and guides students through the use of the ctcLink Student Homepage. Potential sources of aid may include federal, state, private, and institutional student aid
  • Participates in office processing and customer service work involving coverage of phones, front desk, file review, verification, and awarding.
  • May direct the work of other.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, AND
  • Demonstrated experience in excellent customer service, OR
  • Equivalent education/experience

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong technology skills, particularly as they relate to e-communications and data management Expressed interest in working with diverse student populations and the public.
  • Bilingual written and verbal skills in English and Spanish
  • Three years' experience in student services at a college or university

ABILITY TO:
  • Communicate clearly in both verbal and written formats.
  • Provide effective presentations through public speaking.
  • Learn and incorporate new technology and all its functionality.
  • Think critically, be proactive, and take initiative.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Financial aid programs, regulations, and rules pertaining to the exercise of professional judgment.
  • Important processing dates that determine when tasks must be completed.
  • Impact of role on enrollment management and student success.
