Sanitation Manager (1st Shift)

Location: Manteno, IL, 60950

Overview

JOB SUMMARY:

The Sanitation Manger works with the production, maintenance, and quality department to ensure compliance with GMP’s and Federal, State, and local food safety standards. The Sanitation Manager is a coach and mentor to sanitation employees, verifies and validates cleaning practices and provides insights for improvement. Responsible for ensuring that entire facilities are operating in a hygienic manner on a continuous basis through effective management of company’s sanitation and pest control programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Develop and maintain a sanitation program that includes hiring direct reports, writing SSOPs, comprehensive training, documentation, master sanitation schedule compliance, process improvement, audit preparation, safety procedures compliance, inventory maintenance and new and existing process cleaning validations.

2. Lead a sanitation department that ensures all cleaning systems and plant sanitation programs are in compliance to company food safety and regulatory requirements as well as federal, state and local regulations, SQF, and customer requirements.

3. Support food safety policies to include allergen control and environmental monitoring program.

4. Assess plant sanitary conditions, identify risk based on food safety principles and determine corrective actions.

5. Review sanitation staff job descriptions and key objectives to be met for all direct reports in conjunction with Quality Assurance Leadership. Job descriptions should reflect strict division of labor/responsibility within the department and should state explicitly all given responsibilities and promote direct accountability.

6. Schedule all direct reports - to provide adequate coverage for a comprehensive daily, weekly, monthly, etc. sanitation program.

7. Provide appropriate chemical and safety training for all direct reports.

8. Assist QA Leadership by providing quantitative and justifiable criteria for all inefficiencies in staffing, equipment, procedures and programs. Communicate any/all possible improvements.

9. Work closely with Pest Control Operator to ensure established IPM is working as intended and conducts periodic analysis of trend reports.

10. Responsible for ensuring the compliance with all GMP, Food Safety and Plant Safety rules in the processing facility. Receives, investigates and implements corrective action for Food Safety and Quality concerns reported by staff or discovered in daily processes.

11. Ensure all scheduled plant sanitation activities for processing equipment is executed as defined in the SSOPs and efficiently.

12. Ensure all direct reports follow a strict regimen of safety precautions while cleaning.

13. Develop/Review, maintain and monitor Master Sanitation Schedule.

14. Develop/Review, maintain and monitor sanitation standard operating procedures for all CIP circuits, processing equipment, packaging equipment, building, etc., to ensure repeatability of cleaning standards and efficacy.

15. Participate in food safety and regulatory audits.

16. Responsible for overseeing the purchasing of sanitation supplies and operating within budget

17. Ensure all cleaning equipment and tools are maintained for peak performance and effective cleaning.

18. Ensure proper concentrations of chemicals, and temperatures are reached to maintain an effective cleaning.

19. Collaborate with Production Leadership to ensure all changeovers are executed properly.

20. Provide technical assistance to QA Leadership for continually improving methodologies and programs.

21. Lead team in troubleshooting efforts for CIP, COP, and sanitation related issues.

22. Make recommendations regarding personnel requirements and training needs.

23. Ensure corrective actions to PCO observations are addressed in a timely manner.

24. All staff are responsible for Compliance with all GMP, Food Safety and Plant Safety rules while in the processing facility. Staff are encouraged to report Food Safety and Quality concerns immediately to their supervisors and Quality representatives on shift.

25. Other responsibilities as assigned by Management.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent – Bachelor’s degree preferred. Qualified individuals with have at least 5 years’ experience in Food Manufacturing in Quality/Sanitation, preferred, with at least 3 years in a supervisory position. Experience in scheduling, training, and directing cleaning crews is required. Knowledge and experience working with HACCP, and Sanitation principles, verification and validation methods. Incumbents must have a good understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) and experience with GFSI Auditing platforms such as SQF or BRC. This position requires a strong leader that successfully coaches, trains, and follows up with people to ensure sanitation goals are met. Individuals in this role must have strong attention to detail, planning, organizational, oral and written communication skills. Must be proficient in computer skills and familiar with MS Word and Excel. Work schedule can vary and may require support on second and third shift as needed, including weekends.

MANAGEMENT:

Manages Sanitation department staff including Technicians and Leads. Manages multiple shifts and provides work direction, performance feedback, coaching, and makes employment recommendations to HR.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Ability to carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

2. Be able to perform the above tasks in different working conditions, such as hot and cold environments

3. Medically fit to handle minor exposure to chemical cleaning solutions.

4. Must wear assigned PPE and follow sanitation procedures

5. At least 8 hours on feet standing or walking to work station with frequent bending or stooping to clean around equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position works in a manufacturing environment with variable temperature and loud noises from machinery and equipment alarms. The incumbent will be exposed to loud noises and alarms from equipment and machinery.
