Benton County is seeking a Safety Officer!

The Safety Officer will work closely with the HR Director to plan, maintain and oversee a county-wide safety program. This person in this position will provide guidance to the various safety committees and serve as the safety liaison for county departments.

Job Summary
The County Safety Officer develops and administers occupational safety and injury-loss prevention programs, including workers' compensation, for the County. The person in this position provides consultation and guidance in the management of health and safety issues for County employees or the public that interact with County facilities or functions. The County Safety Officer reviews, evaluates, and analyzes work environments and designs programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors. The person in this position serves as consultant to County management in the area of occupational health and safety and provides guidance in the management of health and safety problems. The person in this position may be activated to serve as the Emergency Operations Center's Safety Officer.

A telework option is available for a portion of the work schedule upon successful completion of the probationary period.

  • Annual salary range of:
    • $73,054 - $109,579
    • This position is eligible for up to two salary raises within your first year. An Increase may be given at the end of the 6-month probationary period, depending on starting salary, and at the 1-year anniversary, as long as your performance is in good standing! Annual performance-based increases are given until the maximum of the salary range is reached.

Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, industrial/occupational hygiene or related field; AND
  • 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience that includes responsibility for developing and coordinating occupational health/safety programs in a public works, construction, heavy equipment or similar setting.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess, or obtain within 30 days of hire, first aid, CPR and AED certifications.
  • Successfully pass a background check.
  • Valid Oregon Driver's License, or ability to obtain.
Ideal Candidate
  • Experience working through the full cycle of workers' compensation claims
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation
  • Thorough understanding of federal, state and safety requirements, including OSHA
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at the same time while meeting deadlines
  • Deliver or oversee safety related training to small and large groups
  • Interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and managers
  • ICS-EOC experience
  • Certified Safety Professional, preferred
