SUMMARY:
The South Bend International Airport is actively recruiting for the position of Safety Officer in our Department of Public Safety. The Department provides law enforcement, fire protection, and EMS services at the airport. Applicants must pass a physical ability test, as well as oral interviews, a background check, psychological evaluation, physical examination, and drug screen. Applicants not already certified as law enforcement officers may be required to pass a written examination.
The selected candidate must have the ability to successfully completeor have completed the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy program. The selected candidate must also hold or be able to complete Firefighter I/II and EMT certification. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 21 years of age, hold a valid driver’s license, and have no felony record.
EDUCATION:
High School diploma or equivalent. State of Indiana certification in the following categories preferred or must complete certification requirements within time frame agreed upon at time of hire: Fire Fighter I/II; Indiana Certified Law Enforcement Officer; and, Certified E.M.T. Also must have or obtain HazMat Awareness & Operations levels; and Basic ARFF course.
EXPERIENCE:
One to two years in police, firefighting, EMT, public or airport safety experience preferred. Candidates already certified as an Indiana Law Enforcement officer, or Firefighter I/II and EMT highly preferred.
LICENSES:
Maintain valid Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patrol roadways, runways, taxiways, front drive, parking lots, fuel farms, A.O.A. and all airport property, buildings, fence line and facilities daily and conduct fuel farm, truck and building inspections.
- Enforce and comply with applicable state, local and federal laws, F.A.A. and T.S.A. requirements, Authority ordinances and any other regulations or legislation as required.
- Perform daily and weekly vehicle inspections and equipment inspections as required, ensuring any problems are reported for repair.
- Perform ARFF and structural firefighting and rescue duties and provide police, fire or medical assistance for the airport authority and outside agencies as directed or approved by shift commander.
- Respond to emergencies when on-duty or from off-duty status.
- Provide emergency medical assistance and services to injured and/or ill persons as required.
- Foot patrol of terminal, authority offices, information center and all airport owned properties insuring all areas are secure on a daily basis.
- Perform initial investigation and complete various reports, maintain records and may testify in court as required.
- Perform physical exercise on a regular basis to maintain a physical condition that is capable of performing essential duties and responsibilities.
- Inspect taxicabs to insure compliance with authority requirements for marking, vehicle condition and safety, and insurance.
- Perform routine, daily Safety facility clean-up activities and may perform minor maintenance.
- Assist with wildlife mitigation efforts and perform depredation activities in accordance with applicable permits.
- Maintain intra- and inter-departmental cooperation and teamwork.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge and attend all scheduled training, conferences and seminars to stay current in the field.
- Perform other tasks, projects and responsibilities as may be assigned.
- All employees are expected to be part of our customer service team as Dedicated Customer Care Specialists.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the airport.
OTHER:
Must be fully conversant in aircraft and structural firefighting; knowledgeable in law enforcement procedures; and, must have thorough knowledge of Airport Authority policy, and departmental rules, regulations, and orders to ensure appropriate enforcement and compliance. Must have knowledge of all facets of airport emergency preparedness and be capable of making command decisions; have the ability to use and understand rescue and fire- fighting tools; the ability to recognize and follow light gun signals and utilize two-way radios; and, the ability to wear SCBA equipment. Must be able to work under pressure; to prioritize and organize; to run, crawl, stand, walk, climb, and lift weights that are required to perform fire rescue duties; and, to work in confined spaces and/or inclement weather. Must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and, to interact with a variety of personalities. Need to be able to maintain complete, accurate records; to prepare accurate and timely reports; and, to have knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Must be able to work Independently as well as with others; to effectively and impartially enforce regulations and airport policies; and, to maintain confidentiality.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Work is frequently performed in a standard office environment as well as occasional periods of time outdoors.
- Exposure to dust, grease, excessive noise or vibration, noxious gas or fumes and/or extreme outdoor weather conditions may be occasionally expected.
- Ability to push, pull, lift and carry up to 50 pounds. May lift or move up to 165 lbs. while performing public safety duties.
- Position requires frequent reaching with hands and arms, standing, and walking.
- Ability to occasionally climb, kneel, crouch, bend, and crawl are required.
- Ability to sit for constant periods of time.
- Vision abilities required include close, distant, color peripheral, depth and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work performed requires the ability to speak and hear.
- Position is required to frequently drive Authority vehicles on Airport grounds and public highways.
