Router Operator Apprentice
2nd shift: Mon-Thu 4pm-2:30am
3rd shift: Fri-Sun 6am-6:30pm

Job Summary:
Cox Machine, Inc. in our Harper, KS facility is hiring a Registered Apprentice for our Flat Pattern Router. A Router Operator Apprentice is an entry level position and as an apprentice you will gain valuable skills in a manufacturing environment. Apprentices will work under the observation of a skilled operator for the duration of the apprenticeship. Apprentices learn how to set up and operate CNC routers and water jets while producing various shaped parts to customer requirements. Operators must be able to follow detailed standard work instructions and operating procedures. Operators utilize programs to cut out various patterns from a sheet of raw material, change out and maintain tooling and able to understand machine maintenance requirements. Operators will be required to deburr and inspect the part for cosmetic appearances ensuring that their first part and every part is the same per customer requirements.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Position Responsibilities:
  • Calculate dimensions or tolerances, using instruments such as micrometers or calipers and portable CMM or FARO.
  • Machine parts to specifications, using CNC router
  • Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency
  • Understands work orders and blueprints and how they relate to customer requirements.
  • Understands schedules and priorities. Able to follow schedule and make decisions in which order is most critical.
  • Understands material, certifications and traceability and looks for discrepancies.
  • Brings planning changes and continuous improvement ideas to supervisor when running parts on a different machine would be more efficient.
  • Displays a superior knowledge of cosmetic appearance of parts. Catches all flawed parts in the flat pattern area instead of at a later operation.
  • Regularly suggests process improvements. Looks for improved methods of tooling and pathing parts.
  • Communicates well with supervisor. Offers suggestions for process improvements.
  • Knows the importance of cosmetic appearance and what is acceptable. Works to eliminate needless burr and scrap. Monitors countersink tools, reamers, and drill bits to make sure that holes are within tolerance.
Tasks:
  1. Able to perform repetitive work according to the schedule need. Looks for ways to reduce set up and run time.
  2. Has moderate knowledge of blueprint reading skill.
  3. Able to recognize countersink designations and sizes. Understands specifications include with work order. Brings obvious planning changes to supervisor’s attention.
  4. Can utilize inspections tools, such as calipers, height gauges, depth gauges. Always brings in first part to quality within company guidelines.
  5. Maintains equipment in good working condition. Makes sure drill jig bushings are in good working order. Does periodic maintenance of machine and maintains 6S standards in the work area.
