QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High School Graduate (or equivalency).
  2. Job-related training or experience, minimum of five years of successful experience driving buses or over the road experience with similar vehicles.
  3. Demonstrated aptitude for and competence in operation of both a school bus and Type D bus or similar over the road vehicles.
  4. Demonstrated ability to successfully communicate and work with young adults and school staff.
  5. Such additions to the above qualifications as the Board and administration may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO:
Director of Transportation Services
JOB GOAL:
To provide safe and efficient transportation for students so they can take full advantage of the learning opportunities and experiences available through the District's instructional program; extracurricular and co-curricular programs; to contribute to a positive school atmosphere by offering pleasant, responsible, and accommodating transportation services for students and staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Appreciates the worth and dignity of each individual and treats each one with respect and tolerance.
  2. Contributes to a strong District public relations program through courteous and service-oriented student, staff and public contact.
  3. Provides transportation for students and staff on designated routes according to assigned schedule and activity trips as assigned.
  4. Inspects assigned bus for mechanical defects before each operation.
  5. Obeys all traffic laws.
  6. Adheres to all safety requirements, regulations, and measures for school buses.
  7. Maintains current information regarding assigned bus such as a roster of student riders and approximate times of pick up and discharge, map of route, seating assignments, if applicable, mileage records, and reports on emergency evacuation drills, etc.
  8. Remain aware of possible emergency situations, such as severe weather forecasts, so as to be prepared to provide transportation services in the event of unplanned, early dismissals of school.
  9. Identifies for the Transportation Director those locations where he/she can be reached on short notice (such as in the event of an emergency dismissal of school).
  10. Determines if road conditions are safe for travel and notifies the Transportation Director of such a situation.
  11. When away from home, determines if road and/or weather conditions are unsafe to continue travel and notifies the Transportation Supervisor of such a situation.
  12. Exercises general supervision of all students riding in the bus, maintaining discipline and order at all times. On activity trips assists the coach (es) or sponsor(s) to exercise general supervision of all students riding in the bus, in order to maintain discipline, safety, order and rights at all times.
  13. Reports discipline problems and disruptive student(s) as quickly as possible to the transportation supervisor and building administrator.
  14. Picks up and discharges passengers only at designated stops.
  15. Transports only those students and staff members authorized to ride the bus.
  16. Provides a positive role model for students in use of language, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and dress.
  17. Reports as quickly as possible all accidents and traffic violations to the proper law enforcement officials and to the Transportation Supervisor.
  18. Keeps assigned bus clean and in good condition.
  19. Notifies appropriate district personnel in case of mechanical problems and/or if the bus will be delayed in reaching its destination.
  20. Keeps and maintains such data and/or records as may be required by the District or governmental agencies.
  21. Maintains a valid CDL Class A or B Wyoming bus driver's license with required endorsements.
  22. Arranges for and passes an annual physical examination conducted by a licensed physician approved by Big Horn County School District #1. Examination report submitted to the transportation Supervisor.
  23. Participates in in-service training programs as requested.
  24. Follows District policies and procedures.
  25. Knowledge of and being prepared to act in accordance to district and school emergency procedures.
  26. Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Coordinator of Transportation Services.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employment is at-will with hours determined by the amount of time necessary to provide transportation services for route and/or assigned activity driving.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Transportation Supervisor.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's (DMV) License.
  • Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL), class B with Passenger and School Bus endorsement.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Successful prior experience working as a bus driver, preferably in a school district or transporting children but not mandatory.
  • This position is subject to pre-hire background check and pre-employment drug test.
