Position Description
The Transportation Maintenance & Repair division is responsible for the asset management of the City's infrastructure. Under the guidance of a Professional Engineer there are many opportunities for students to assist in a variety of activities. Some of these assignments are Construction inspection and field engineering, Survey, Asset management, Code enforcement and Working with the public.
As an intern in this division, you will be provided a city vehicle and cell phone. In addition to this, special field trips will be offered such as tours of the water treatment plant, the heavy fleet repair garages, the traffic control center, the recycling yard and a water pipe lining operation.
While working in this division some of the opportunities you will experience are:
• Assist Professional Engineers and Managers on city construction projects.
• Assist with engineering calculations, documentation, as built data, and interpretation of design plans and field inspection.
• Create design plans.
• Work with staff to respond to resident concerns.
• Work on a variety of construction and engineering assignments.
Duration - 2024 construction season - May to August with possibility to extend through November and are willing to work with school schedules. 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Work Location - This position currently works on-site only.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Roadway, Bridge, and Pedestrian interns will assist the Transportation Maintenance and Repair division of Public Works. This division is responsible for the asset management of the City's infrastructure. Under the guidance of a Professional Engineer there are many opportunities for students to assist in a variety of activities. Some of these assignments are:
• Construction inspection and field engineering
• Survey
• Asset management
• Code enforcement
• Working with the public
Required Qualifications
All applicants must:
• Be 18 or older
• Registered for college
• Be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Computer skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
• Self-motivated candidates should have the ability to work independently and, in a team, environment.
License/Certifications: By time of hire, must possess and continue to maintain a valid Driver's License.
Background Check: The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
Drug and Alcohol Testing: All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement: The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.
Interview Selection: The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
