POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing for the Associate Degree Nursing Program, Pediatric Instructors assume responsibility and accountability for theory instruction, instructional counseling, academic advising, evaluation of student and course outcomes, and planning, implementing and evaluating curriculum content. The California Board of Registered Nursing and CNI College considers part time faculty share the same responsibilities as full time faculty.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS
Demonstrate a commitment to professional nursing
- Participate in professional organizations through active membership
- Participate in local, state, and national activities, including presentations, designed to enhance the profession.
Maintain clinical expertise
- Maintain professional practice in area of clinical expertise
- Provide clinical instruction of nursing students
- Evaluate clinical facilities ability to provide students with optimal learning experiences and provide feedback to the Associate Director of Nursing no later than the end of each clinical rotation.
Participate in ongoing professional development
- Prepares a profile that includes the last five (5) years of activities related to their approved nursing area(s) including CE hours and/or clinical work experience sufficient to demonstrate faculty expertise and continued clinical competency.
- Complete professional development activities to maintain expertise in accordance with college standards and identified individual needs.
Utilize Best Practices to enhance the learning environment
- Content experts are responsible to review and monitor the program’s entire curricular content for obstetrics.
- Demonstrate competence in theory and clinical education, teaching, assessment of learning, and curriculum development and expertise, enthusiasm and creativity in teaching which produce an environment where learning and self-improvement occur
- Coordinate, plan, organize and instruct theory or clinical courses based on approved program curriculum to achieve the specific course outcome objectives
- Evaluate student achievement of curricular objectives/outcomes related to nursing knowledge and practice
- Apply existing technologies in a creative manner
- Identify students at risk for not achieving course outcomes in order to provide corrective action plans and remediation. All remediation must be discussed with the Director.
- Communicate student progress concerns to Director to insure compliance to remediation policies.
Serve as a professional role model
- Demonstrate competence in theory and clinical education, teaching, assessment of learning, and curriculum development and expertise, enthusiasm and creativity in teaching which produce an environment where learning and self-improvement occur
- Participate in curriculum, team and evaluation committees
- Attend faculty meetings, student governance, and professional development and orientation activities
- Provide student instructional counseling and academic advisement
- Serve as faculty adviser for the student governance body and facilitator for Nursing Success Seminars
- Consistently model professional nursing behavior and college’s core values.
Demonstrate commitment to the college, school and program
- Under the direction of the Director develop policies and procedures, plan, organize, implement and evaluate all aspects of the program
- Participate in Faculty and Consortium Meetings, Clinical Affiliation Meetings, Curriculum, Team and Evaluation Committee, and Student Governance Activities
- Comply with all college and program policies and procedures and regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Maintain accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records; complete clinical and course evaluations
- Provide supervision only for CNI registered nursing students in clinical settings
- Effectively communicate to students and college/program faculty and staff
- Contribute to the development of faculty and student learning resources
- Maintain adequate office hours to provide academic advising and instructional counseling
- Participation in nursing success seminars to provide tutoring, remediating and mentoring
- Promote student and faculty recruitment through networking and career/college fairs
- Complete faculty orientation program, review program curriculum, policies and procedures, strategies for teaching, and responsibilities related to student supervision and evaluation
SPECIFICATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Eligibility for approval by the California Board of Registered Nursing
- Bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration
- Current California license as a registered professional nurse in good standing.
- Validated clinical competence in subject matter . Must possess and exercise the degree of learning, skill, care and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by staff level registered nurses of the nursing area assigned.
- 1 year continuous full-time, or its equivalent, experience providing direct patient care as an RN in the subject matter within the last 5 years; or 1 academic year of RN level clinical teaching experience in the obstetrics its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency within the last 5 years.
- Completion of at least one year’s experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of an accredited post-baccalaureate course that included practice in teaching registered nursing (including teaching strategies, course outline & lesson plan development, evaluation, and practice teaching).
- Current BCLS certification and clinical requirements for immunizations and orientations determined appropriate by clinical agencies.
- Current clinical nursing malpractice insurance.
- Criminal background clearance.
- Physical/health clearance from licensed healthcare provider, including clinical participation requirements
- Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of program students, faculty and staff.
