Your Role

The Risk and Claims Manager will report to the Director of Risk Management and support the organization’s comprehensive insurance, Risk and cargo claims management programs, assessing and identifying risks that could impede the reputation, safety, security, or financial success of the organization. Duties include scribing, reviewing, and reporting on operational and financial procedures, lead and assess the proper policies of the organization, provide hands-on development of risk models and assure operational controls are operating effectively.  Additionally, the manager’s responsibility is the oversight of the freight cargo claims team and ensure the proper and efficient handling of the claims lifecycle.  The manager will be responsible for identifying and supporting risk reduction opportunities throughout the organization, including financial risk management activities and insurance programs. Communication, hands-on attitude, collaboration, organization, and being process oriented are critical to the success of position.

 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

General Risk Mitigation

  • Conducts risk assessments, collecting and analyzing documentation, statistics, reports, and market trends
  • Establishes policies and procedures to identify and address risks in the organizations services and departments
  • Reviews and assesses risk management policies and protocols to ensure proper guardrails withing the business to limit current and potential concerns; makes recommendations and implements modifications and improvements
  • Recommends and implements risk management solutions such as insurance, safety and security policies, business continuity plans, or recovery measures
  • Reviews and analyzes metrics and data such as cash flow, system activity and employee activity that could uncover fraudulent behavior
  • Drafts and present risk reports and proposals that identifies and analyzes threats to the assets and earning capacity and success of a business to executive leadership
  • Manage company’s liability insurance programs and bonds

 

Cargo Claims Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day claims processes including inventory management of claims, claim adjustments, recoupments, and refunds to meet quality and timeliness standards
  • Maintain departmental performance standards; review and analyze weekly and monthly department performance reports; address performance issues and implement needed interventions and coaching to meet and exceed production and quality metrics
  • Develop and maintains policies and procedures for the claims department
  • Manage relationships with management teams and serve as the primary representative of the claims function to internal and external stakeholders
  • Consistently monitor for changes impacting the effectiveness or operations of the function and adjust process, documentation, or communication as needed
  • Champion a continuous improvement mindset and propose, design, and/or implement new solutions to increase the efficiency and compliance of the business
  • Mentor team members and assist other groups to ensure client issues are being worked as effectively as possible
  • Acts as primary liaison to insurance companies, motor carriers, attorneys, and customer credit teams

 

Process Orientation & Communication

  • Create an environment of risk awareness and promote risk reduction for the organization
  • Design and implement compliance programs, policies, and practices to ensure that departments and business functions are complying with work and system procedures
  • Publishing and distributing periodic summary reports to key stakeholders which communicate issues, gaps, and potential solutions
  • Communicate and present findings, solutions and action plan to executive management
