WORK WEEK SCHEDULE
Monday-Friday (occasional evenings and weekends) Position is available for a Hybrid Telework workweek

POSITION PURPOSE:
Assists with the Wake County Public School Systems’ (WCPSS) workers’ compensation program, including ensuring Return to Work assistance. Coordinates with schools and departments regarding workers’ compensation needs. Assists with the claims processing and day-to-day operations of the workers’ compensation program. Ensures program conformance to applicable laws and regulations. Prepares required program reports. Collaborates for evaluation of program activities to ensure the delivery of quality services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
  • Considerable knowledge of workers’ compensation laws, policies, procedures, and practice, included but not limited to, workers’ compensation claims processing;
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically, Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Google Apps;
  • Knowledge of school district policies, regulations, practices and procedures and public education laws;
  • Knowledge of leave processes for classified and professional staff;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback; ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of people, personalities, and situations;
  • Ability to respond quickly to multiple and varied activities, and plan and manage projects within time constraints;
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of very sensitive matters and information;
  • Ability to analyze facts and present recommendations;
  • Ability to handle difficult situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially;
  • Ability to Work independently without close supervision, but also function as a member of a team;
  • Ability to complete complex tasks and minimize errors with attention to detail;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, third party administrators, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associates degree in business or related field; AND
  • Three years of experience in workers’ compensation, risk management, project management, or related field.
An equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully meet the essential duties may be considered.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in accordance with the State of North Carolina requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with self-insured workers’ compensation fund and handling split-funded workers’ compensation claims;
  • Experience facilitating the reduction of lost-time and disability by making recommendations to adapt work processes, tailor the work, environment, or provide work alternatives to safely accommodate the clinically prescribed functional restrictions/limitations of an injured worker;
  • Experience using Oracle business applications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinates the return-to-work program to assist employees who are injured on the job and facilitate their Return to temporary modified duties or regular duties, working with the employees, supervisors, workers’ compensation adjusters, and health practitioners.
  • Collaborates with Senior Administrator and Director to create and implement a light duty program. Identifies light duty positions and tracks and analyzes data regarding temporary modified assignments. Identifies barriers and limitations to return-to-work. In collaboration with staff, develops and evaluates Return to Work procedures.
  • Monitors the outcomes, timeframe, and return-to-work status of employees on temporary, modified duty, or out of work.
  • Works closely with Compensation Services in managing loss time of employees and determines actual time missed from work due to Work related injuries and illnesses.
  • Provides accurate information to meet OSHA record-keeping requirements.
  • Coordinates job analysis with workers’ compensation third-party administrators.
  • Ensures the Senior Administrator and Director are apprised of any claims needing special attention.
  • Meets with employees, as requested, or needed, to address return-to-work issues.
  • Assists supervisors and employers determine how to prevent recurrence or aggravation of injuries, including, working with the Risk Management department, as needed, regarding safety issues.
  • Provides presentations and workshops for schools and departments regarding workers’ compensation return-to- work program and procedures.
  • Attends meetings, professional development, and conferences to stay abreast of current policies and procedures related to Workers’ compensation, including N.C. Industrial Commission conferences.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work requires driving automotive equipment.
