SALARY: $50.00 per hour
JOB OVERVIEW: The Retail Pharmacist is responsible for providing direction to Pharmacist Interns, Pharmacy Technicians, and clerks. In addition to supporting the Pharmacy Manager in leading and directing the Pharmacy Technician support staff, applies knowledge, skills, and tools to ensure the overall success of day to day operations of the Pharmacy. Provides pharmaceutical care to customers by receiving, reviewing, and interpreting prescription orders and verifying accuracy and completeness of patient order.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (include but not limited to):

  • Examines and carries out physician’s orders, ensuring that they are legal and acceptable.
  • Fills, dispenses, compounds, and safely/accurately distributes pharmacy products.
  • Collaborates and consults with patients and medical personnel regarding health care and medication therapy.
  • Performs prescription transfers as allowed by law at the request of patients.
  • Follows-up with providers’ offices to clarify prescribed medication questions and concerns (dosage, interactions, allergies).
  • Counsels patients and responds to their questions regarding usage of medication, significant precautions, proper drug therapy and administration, awareness with drug interactions, possible side effects, and proper storage of medication, according to established policies and procedures.
  • Provides patient counseling for OTC products and makes recommendations as appropriate based on information gathered.
  • Ensures accurate processing of insurance claims.
  • Answers telephone calls and checks voicemails.
  • Resolves customer issues in a timely manner and answers questions to ensure a positive customer experience.
  • Monitors, orders and maintains accurate inventory of drugs.
  • Monitors delivery, receipt, and proper storage of medications.
  • Offers and administers preventative vaccines and immunizations to eligible patients.
  • Supervises, manages, and provides direction to pharmacy team members.
  • Updates self regularly with current pharmacy practice, regulatory changes, approval of new drugs and their uses.
  • Maintains work space and equipment in a clean and organized condition, maintaining an efficient and safe work environment.
  • Assists pharmacy manager in identifying ways to optimize pharmacy financials, inventory management, and enhance customer service.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality under HIPAA law and company policies.


QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Requires broad training and experience in a community pharmacy setting with knowledge of current Federal and State laws, regulations, and standards pertaining to the practice of pharmacy.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate or Pharm D degree in pharmacy

Specialized Experience: Two (2) years of work experience (preferably management) in a retail/community pharmacy. This experience must demonstrate the applicant’s knowledge of the procedures, policies and practices of a retail pharmacy operation; personnel management; various third-party plans; current drug forms, dosage strengths, and generic/trade name and traditional equivalents. Experience in a high-volume pharmacy preferred.

License: Valid license with the State of Hawaii as a Pharmacist, Immunization Certification through an ACPE Accredited Immunization training program.

Certification Required: Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider (adult, child, and infant).

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of supervision; personnel administration; current pharmacological principles, medical terminology, disease states, and other information as it pertains to medical or pharmaceutical care; the Good Faith Dispensing policy in conjunction with State and Federal controlled substance laws.

Ability to: Interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, and policies; Interact effectively with team members, patients, and providers; provide excellent customer service; multi-task; maintain cooperative working relationships.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to perform a variety of duties as dictated by various demands and changing conditions, able to meet physical demands of the job including frequent standing, bending, reaching, and walking; operate pharmacy computer systems and other equipment in a fast-paced environment.

East Hawaii Health Pharmacy is the East Hawaii Region's retail pharmacy located in the lobby of Hilo Medical Center. We offer prescription pick-up, refill, and over-the-counter items for our patients and families, including a “Meds to Beds” program that delivers prescriptions to patients in the hospital before they are discharged. East Hawaii Health Pharmacy is expanding its hours in the coming months to provide enhanced service to our neighbors, family members and friends. Grow with our team!
