Organization

The Head of the Museum’s Department of Education and Community Engagement (DECE) is responsible for the administration, leadership, and management of the department including the development, implementation, and evaluation of STEAM-based educational curricula and public and outreach programs and is expected to assist in teaching classes and leading public programs (including some nights and weekends). The Head of the DECE is also responsible for administration of the Museum’s Discovery Room programs and Volunteer program. This position has significant budget management duties and must strategize program funding utilizing multiple funding streams. The ability to seek, obtain, and implement outside funding (e.g., grants) for educational and public programs is a critical function of this position. This position reports to the Associate Director of the Museum.

Duties:

  • Responsible for program administration in addition to monitoring projects, program evaluations, and developing long-range plans.
  • Directs program administration, implementation, tracking and budget development.
  • Develops an overarching vision and strategy for programs.
  • Establishes operational and strategic unit goals. 
  • Develops, implements and interprets policies and practices of the program.
  • Explores and creates new program opportunities.  Coordinates with internal and external constituents and campus staff to foster program growth.
  • Serves on various committees and represents the program to the public and client groups.
  • Performs related duties as assigned to successfully fulfill the function of the position.  

Job Location

Required Education: Master's degree, AND:

  • 24 months related experience.    

Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept 72 months experience in lieu of the Master's degree for a total of 96 months related experience.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in the development of STEAM-based learning objectives
  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring programming effectiveness by gathering and analyzing qualitative and
    quantitative statistics, including attendance and other engagement metrics
  • Demonstrated experience leading staff, part-time personnel, students, volunteers, and/or interns to achieve positive
    outcomes
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, following through on assignments with minimal direction, and completing
    workloads with established time frames
  • Demonstrated basic experience with AV equipment (e.g., projectors, microphones)

Certifications:

  • None

Departmental Preferences:

  • M.S. degree in Education, especially science education
  • 24 months experience in Museum education, science education, and/or art education experience, as evidenced by
    record of active teaching and/or curriculum development
  • 24 months experience in project management for informal, museum and/or Community Engagement and/or outreach
    programming, as evidenced by the record of program development
  • Demonstrated experience with Oklahoma Science Standards (or comparable for other state)
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation and management of operational budgets
  • Demonstrated experience in obtaining and administering grants, as evidenced by a record of successful grantsmanship
  • Demonstrated experience in the use and implementation of Educational technology tools
  • Ability to negotiate, and exchange ideas, information, and opinions with others to develop programs and/or arrive at
    decisions, conclusions, or solutions
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff members, students, and volunteers
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with individuals of all ages and backgrounds
  • Energetic and engaging presentation style
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations
  • Excellent customer service skills
