Position:Residential Instructor
Location: Bronzeville, Chicago, IL
Shift:
Monday - Friday, 8a-4:30p
Summary:
Under the general guidance of the Associate Director for Education and Recreation, the Residential Instructor provides key support to children and adolescents in our Unaccompanied Children programs. Residential Instructors within our Unaccompanied Children program work to prepare recent arrivals to the U.S. with skills needed to transition successfully to a new culture, and language, and a rapid transition to caregivers in the U.S. Residential Instructors work with children from diverse cultures and language groups who may present from a wide range of ages and different education levels. Residential Instructors develop and implement curricula, and provide classroom instruction, physical education, and recreational activities. Residential Instructors also ensure to monitor and supervise program participants and ensure a safe and secure environment both on-site and during off-site activities. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below. The Residential Instructor leverages industry knowledge and best practices to promote the mission and vision of Heartland Alliance. Supports culture development and management efforts.

Essential Functions:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements lesson plans and curricula per program guidelines and ensures appropriate documentation and record-keeping.
  • Provides culturally competent classroom instruction to students in grades K-12 in various subject areas, including but not limited to ESL, math, science, and health.
  • Engages in physical education activities and instruction, including but not limited to swimming, basketball, and soccer.
  • Monitors and supervises program participants individually and in groups.
  • Ensures a safe and secure environment for program participants and staff on-site and during off-site activities.
  • Helps program participants to modify attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing understanding of self, personal problems, and program participant's part in creating them.
  • Provides transportation of program participants, as assigned.
  • Other duties may be assigned

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Household maintenance duties such as meals, laundry, and hygiene instruction may occasionally be assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institute of higher learning in education, or related field is required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience or related teaching experience, such as tutoring, mentoring, coaching, or classroom facilitation is required.
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) preferred.
  • Expertise in a particular subject area may be required.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Fluency in a second language may be required.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Access to regular, dependable, and timely transportation.
  • Ability and comfortability working with children and people of varying cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder, and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations professionally and diplomatically.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision

Work Arrangement:

  • This is an in-person position.
  • Work is primarily performed in a YRS residential facility but may also be performed at community sites for field trips or other locations as needed.
  • Depending upon activities and season, may be required to be outdoors for regular, prolonged activities.
  • This role must be flexible in their ability to travel between multiple sites in a day. In-person meetings may be required regularly (weekly, monthly, etc.)

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Each program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year.
  • To meet both the needs of our participants and contractual obligations, employees are required to be flexible regarding scheduling and work location.
  • Program sites are located throughout the Chicago area, including the North and South sides of Chicago, as well as the suburbs. Employees may be required to report to any one of our locations on a temporary or permanent basis.

  • The employee is regularly required to perform all activities with children, i.e. jump, dance, walk, or run, etc. for extended periods.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds.
