REPORTS TO: The Assistant Director (s) of Housing and Residential Education

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: A live-in, 46-week professional position with primary responsibility for the overall management and supervision of a residential community. The Resident Director participates in planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating a residential education program and has a thorough understanding of student development theory. The Resident Director also works to promote a positive, engaging environment for residential students while representing the department and division. Supervises Resident Assistant (RA) para-professional live-in staff, work study, and other student employees including Desk Attendants (DAs).

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Utilizes a working knowledge of student development principles, through direct involvement with students, enhances the development of students, and provides general management and supervision for a specified residential community
• Supervises Resident Assistant (RA) staff and Desk Attendant (DA) staff assigned to area of responsibility, including time reporting and personnel record keeping
• Builds community by providing and implementing programs based on student needs, through supervision of RA-related programming efforts, regular one-on-one meetings with RAs to discuss specific status of assigned residents, conducting student conduct meetings, and supervising a Senior Resident Assistant (SRA) who is primarily responsible for monthly newsletter and advisement of Hall Council. The RD must maintain a presence and visibility in the residential community.
• Provides direct customer service and responsive communication with students, parents, and families
• Works collaboratively with university academic partners and staff to develop both general and specialized thematic Residential Living-Learning Communities
• Acts as a general resource person by providing and referring students for additional services with specialized personnel including Public Safety, Counseling, Academic Advising, Unity House, Campus Services, Health Services, Financial Aid, and others as needed
• Administers conduct violation documentation process and enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct. Advises residence hall staff in conduct-related matters; serves as a Conduct Conference Facilitator in original jurisdiction disciplinary cases. Advises students in conduct-related matters. Works cooperatively with other University offices with oversight of student conduct matters (i.e., Office of Student Conduct, Student Affairs, Public Safety, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and Counseling Services)
• Works cooperatively with fellow staff to implement and enforce published departmental and University policies and procedures. Serves on duty on nights and weekends to address issues that arise after business hours. Works to resolve crises that arise. Aware of University Crisis Protocol and is skilled in making referrals as necessary. Acts as the on-site liaison to the Department of Public Safety regarding issues affecting the safety and security of University students.
• Assumes central office administrative functions which may include serving on or taking a leadership role in one or more of the following committees: RA Training (onsite and online), RA Selection, Orientation, Summer Student & Conference Housing, RSA Advisor, Publications, Semester Opening, Programming, In-Service & Staff Development, Publications, CARE Team, Quad Fest, Corsair Olympics, Desk Coverage, search and screen tasks, and other activities related to organizational development and assessment
• Participates in the development and facilitation of RA Trainings and staff development initiatives including the presentation and facilitation of training and planning sessions
• Provides comprehensive readiness of the residential community and performs timely follow-up as needed to reach this readiness goal. Supervises student staff in routine room inspection and performs an inspection of assigned residential areas prior to semester opening, closing, and break periods. Maintains an up-to-date inventory of all keys, handles key assignments, orders new keys, and requests re-keying of rooms as needed.
• Facilitates occupancy and assignment-related tasks within the specified area of residential responsibility including but not limited to residential census, room changes, vacancies, and immunization or full-time status/enrollment compliance
• Coordinates and expedites general maintenance and housekeeping functions in the residence halls, including supervision, inspection, and expedition of work orders. Works diligently to implement programs that will prevent or mitigate damage and vandalism. Coordinates damage billing procedures within each residential community. This includes entering and tracking work orders, contacting facilities regarding outstanding work orders, providing customer service and communication to residents regarding status, and maintaining a functional tracking system.
• Attends departmental and divisional meetings as assigned. Prepares and provides data needed for departmental reports and record keeping such as occupancy reports, room change roster, programming spreadsheets, etc. May represent the department on university committees.
• Participates in and promotes activities for the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Admissions
• Under supervision of the Assistant Director, assist in the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of the Resident Assistant staff
• Under supervision of Assistant Director, manages supply, Hall Council, and Programming budgets
• Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree required.

EXPERIENCE:

Previous Residence Life experience or comparable responsibility in an educational group living environment. Previous post-baccalaureate experience with staff supervision, student conduct, educational programming, and residential community operations.

OTHER:

A live-in position. 46-week annual contract with 6 weeks off contract between June 1-July 31 each year. Ability to work flexible schedule including some evening and weekend work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Working knowledge and understanding of student development, and issues related to college-age individuals
• Ability to communicate professionally with all members of the University Community, including students and parents
• Effective oral and written communication skills are essential
• Ability to be a successful post-baccalaureate role model for undergraduate students striving to reach this same goal
• Demonstrated ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations
• This multi-faceted role is highly challenging and calls for emotional stability, organizational ability, reliability, and inclusive
human relationship skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s Degree. Previous experience as Resident Director. Experience in developing and maintaining Residential Learning Communities or other academic initiatives.
