We house approximately 13,000 predominately first year students in 14 traditional residence halls and 4 unfurnished apartment communities. Job Summary
The Residence Life Coordinator for Student Involvement and Engagement is responsible for programs and initiatives related to the residential student experience on campus and in university-owned properties. Initiatives are focused on developing a student community that is diverse and inclusive, academically, and socially stimulating, and ensures student well-being and safety. This specifically works with leadership programs and other high-impact practices to support and engage students of all backgrounds.
Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Supervises the day-to-day work of 15 to 30 part-time undergraduate staff supporting the Hoosier Den programming areas (currently located in Foster Gresham and Read).
  • Develops on-going training opportunities, holds staff accountable to department and center expectations, and makes hiring decisions.
  • Works collaboratively with the Assistant Director for Student Learning and Engagement, colleagues, and student leaders in the advising and managing of the Residence Halls Association (RHA), Apartment Housing Council (AHC), and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) chapter (currently working to re-constitute this group).
  • Supports students, student staff, and campus student groups in planning and implementing small- and large-scale programs in the 2 Hoosier Dens. This includes management of the space reservation process. Ensures programs promote a positive community living experience and support the Residential Curriculum that cultivates productive and well-rounded citizens through intentional experiences as they learn, engage, and grow during their time on campus.
  • Serves as the Residence Life liaison to the First Year Experience office for Welcome Week activities in the residence halls.
  • Serves on the planning committee for 2 annual Residence Life student leadership training events for RHA, AHC, and the living-learning center and thematic community leadership councils. Trainings happen at the beginning of each academic semester.
General Responsibilities
  • Establishes and maintains a positive residential community that supports and enhances the educational mission of the university through developmental and social programs, personal student contacts, and the fostering of faculty-student interaction. Initiates and fosters student leadership opportunities, personal responsibility, and respect for others.
  • Frequently interacts with students on an individual and group basis; listens to concerns and issues, advises students on programs and initiatives across the university that may help with academic goals and/or student engagement, and recommends resources for students in crisis or facing adversity.
  • Addresses and resolves student behavioral problems within assigned hall(s)/unit(s) and documents and reports incidents to manager, student conduct staff, or law enforcement as appropriate, maintaining confidentiality and university policy and procedures.
  • Coordinates and delegates hall administrative tasks, including room changes, and programming account expenditures.
  • Communicates, interprets, and administers residence hall rules and regulations as well as the student code of conduct and other relevant university policies.
  • Responds to and resolves resident, guest, parent/guardian, and other stakeholder concerns or complaints. Responds to and assists with the management of building-wide emergencies or crisis situations.
  • Provides day-to-day supervision of live-in student staff members and assists with selection, training, and evaluation.
  • May assist with housing application review, housing assignments, and housing reassignments. May assist with hall councils, oversight of student desk operations, and liaising with unit and campus partners.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs, counseling, or closely related field may be required
WORK EXPERIENCE
Preferred
  • Some experience in student services, higher education, or related field

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Additional Information
The Office of Residence Life will be implementing a promotion plan for the RLC-SD position beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. Structured as Learn It, Lead It, Expand It, staff members can demonstrate how they have grown and will gain additional skill sets through their time in the position. Everyone will come in at the Learn It phase and through their work, will be reviewed on a yearly basis for progression, which comes with additional compensation.

It is a condition of employment for the incumbent of this position, RLC-SD, to live on-site in housing provided by Indiana University.
Note: This is a full-time professional position for a 12-month housing operation where living in an on-campus residence hall apartment is a condition of employment.
Advertised Salary
$45,000 annually
