Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III for Public Health Research Institute. This position is under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Research Operations Assistant Director, and conducts research activities in diagnostic microbiology within a specialized biosafety level three (BSL3) containment laboratory. May be responsible for the management of a small-sized laboratory area. Assists the Principal Investigator with budgetary, training and administrative responsibilities, income revenue streams.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria including M. Tuberculosis requiring work in BSL3 facilities.
  • Performs detailed MICs and DNA/RNA extraction of above described bacteria using various systems and performs preliminary analysis.
  • Assists in the development and testing of new assays.
  • Works safely in a BSL3 environment.
  • Assists in managing BSL3 facilities
  • Responsible for organizing laboratory to increase efficiency
  • Responsible for ordering and stocking supplies for best functioning of the laboratory and cost effectiveness.
  • Assists in the establishment of performance standards, as well as in the selection of methodology and instrumentation.
  • Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development.
  • Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience,
  • OR a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience in microbiological and bimolecular techniques with BSL2 and BSL3 bacterial pathogens.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with virulent M. tuberculosis

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. Sitting at computer for length of time; lifting of charts approx. 3-5 lbs. up to 25 lbs. No special vision requirements.
