Description & Details:
The Entomology program within the NDSU School of Natural Resource Sciences seeks a Research Specialist to assist with research on insect pest biology and management in Sugar beet and other field crops of regional importance. The successful applicant will also support Extension/outreach activities managed by the supervisor.
Typical research projects in this program include 1) field and laboratory performance trials on chemical and bio-based insecticides, and pest-resistant germplasm for managing economically important Sugar beet insect pests; 2) insect pest monitoring and damage assessment; and 3) insect pest biology/ecology studies. Extension support duties include assistance with planning and executing summer field day tours and winter grower seminars, as well as presenting results at local research forums. Another outreach duty will involve running NDSU's Sugar beet planter test stand clinics (multiple locations; training provided) and maintaining test stand equipment.
The successful applicant will provide assistance and leadership in all aspects of field research plot establishment and maintenance, including tractor/planter operation, pesticide mixing, calibration, and application, harvest operations, and data collection/entry/tabulation. Additional duties will include procuring personal safety equipment, constructing field plans, measuring and marking plot land, operating a tractor (incl. autosteer), as well as other field equipment (e.g., planters, pesticide application equipment, etc.), operating vehicles pulling large trailers to transport field implements, and maintenance/repair of agricultural equipment used for row crop planting and pesticide applications. Responsibilities will also include supervision and training of seasonal and student employees. Limited off-site travel, including overnight trips within the work week, is required.

  • Full-time, 12-month

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in agriculture/agronomy, horticulture, biology or a related field or equivalent related experience
  • At least 5 years of experience operating a field crop tractor and planter
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience associated with pesticide application techniques and equipment
  • Functional knowledge/experience in using MS Office software (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Possession of/ability to obtain a ND and MN Certified Pesticide Applicator license
  • Possession of/ability to obtain a ND or MN Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects of up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in a team setting and independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. degree in Entomology, Crop Protection, Plant or Crop Science, or a related discipline
  • Mastery in using MS Office software (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Functional knowledge/experience in operating satellite-based tractor autosteer technology
  • At least five years of experience in conducting agricultural field plot research.
  • Five years of experience loading and operating truck/trailer units to haul heavy (e.g. 20,000 lb.) payloads
  • Experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, R, JMP, or ARM)
  • At least two years of supervisory experience
