Position Information
Description & Details:
The successful candidate will become part of a team of scientists and support staff working in beef cattle research and education involving nutrition and management of beef cows and calves and feedlot growing and finishing. The individual selected will be expected to:
  • Participate in planning, conducting, summarizing and presenting practical and progressive research projects focusing on ruminant nutrition, livestock management, environmental issues, health, carcass quality, and economics of livestock production in North Dakota.
  • Participate in husbandry activities such as feeding feedlot cattle and beef cows, calving beef cows, and health care along with logistics planning for feed and other supplies.
  • Help plan and conduct maintenance and renovation of facilities and equipment.
  • Work cooperatively with other NDSU employees in support of Research Center activities.
  • Maintain open and positive communications with faculty, producers, and industry people.

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., occasional weekend feeding, some night shifts during calving
Advertised Salary:
$40,000 to $57,000 depending on qualifications and experience
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Completed Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, Natural Resources or related fields.
  • The ability to safely and efficiently operate and maintain farm and livestock equipment, facilities, and buildings.
  • Previous hands-on experience in care, management, and working of cattle.
  • Physical capability to work in adverse environments, lift, climb, walk and accomplish other tasks related to care and management of livestock throughout the year.
  • Familiarity with Northern Great Plains agriculture.
  • Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills including public speaking experience and producer contact.
  • Ability to organize data, records, reference material, supplies, feed inventory, and other items.
  • A valid US driver's license or qualifications to procure one.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master of Science Degree in Animal Science, Natural Resources, or related fields.
  • 3-years experience working with a livestock operation.
  • Past experience managing feed rations.
  • Familiarity with GIS or other precision agriculture technology.
  • Working knowledge of experimental design and research techniques for experiments with livestock.
  • Experience in statistical analysis of Livestock Research.
  • Leadership ability exhibited in communication, direction, and motivation of personnel.
  • Evidence of independent successful grantsmanship.
  • Proof of collegiality with colleagues, producers, and industry representatives.

About Us:
The Carrington Research Extension Center (CREC) is one of seven NDSU Research Extension Centers and is located approximately 140 miles from the North Dakota State University campus at Fargo. The CREC has six research scientists and four extension specialist positions in the areas of agronomy, livestock environmental management and animal science. Professional and technical staff supports the CREC and NDSU based programs. The general responsibilities of the CREC include research and extension projects that address dryland and irrigated crop production, plant pathology, the soil resource, cropping/tillage systems, crop pest management, beef nutrition and beef production systems, crop and livestock integration, and foundation seedstocks production. The CREC is located in the drift prairie region of North Dakota and conducts research and educational programs for a significant part of North Dakota.
This position is located at the Carrington Research Extension Center near Carrington, North Dakota. Carrington is a thriving rural community of approximately 2,500 people in a widely diversified agricultural production region of east central North Dakota. Carrington has progressive schools (K-12), modern medical services (clinic and hospital), and many recreation opportunities.
