About the Department
Part of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Chicago, the Green Lab studies molecular mechanisms by which nosocomial bacterial pathogens spread and cause disease. Primarily taking genetic and biochemical approaches, the Green Lab is focused on defining mechanisms of pathogen persistence in spread in order to develop novel interventions and therapeutic approaches to target hospital-acquired infections.
Job Summary
The Research Specialist 2 will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, and other lab members, to perform a variety of microbiological and genetic experiments. This position will perform routine tests, records and analyzes data, and will be responsible for handling and working with mice.
Responsibilities

• Under supervision, performs a variety of microbiological and genetic experiments, mutant creation.
• Routine tests may include bacterial culture, microbiological assays, genetic mutagenesis, cloning, PCR.
• Records data, summarizes, and analyzes results using basic statistics.
• Prepares laboratory reagents.
• Will be responsible for handling and working with mice.
• Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan.
• Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
• Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Experience:

• Microbiology lab experience using genetic manipulation of bacteria.
• Lab experience handling and working with mice.
