About the Department
The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC's audience includes NCSU students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.
Essential Job Duties
Essential Job Duties Include but are not limited to the following:
  • Execute and manage projects in the laboratory of Prof. Ruben G. Carbonell in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at NC State University, in collaboration with BTEC scientists and other staff, and NC State undergraduate and graduate students, involving the development of novel ligands and membranes and other supports for the capture and purification of biological products such as antibodies and antibody fragments, vaccines, and viral vectors for gene therapy and cell therapy.
  • Help develop new project concepts and help prepare grant applications for funding from non-profit groups, federal agencies, and industrial clients.
  • Prepare and use different types of new materials for downstream (purification) operations, including resins, nonwoven fabrics, and monoliths for ion exchange, affinity and other types of separations processes meant to capture product and reduce impurities such as host cell proteins, DNA, and adventitious agents. This will involve chemical coupling of ligands as well as fabrication of new membrane devices with the help and collaboration of the Nonwovens Institute at NC State University.
  • Prepare manuscripts, summary reports, and oral presentations for a variety of different audiences, including funding organizations, and attendees at national and international meetings.
  • Support and mentor the work of undergraduate and graduate students working on these projects in the Carbonell laboratory and at BTEC as appropriate.
  • Keep up with new developments in the published literature, patents and commercial applications in the general area of ligands and supports that are used for the industrial purification of biologics.
  • Participate in efforts to safety in the laboratories.
  • Follow documented procedures and policies within the BTEC facility and at the University.

Other Responsibilities
  • Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications
State Minimum Education and Experience
  • B.S.* in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, materials engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline) with a minimum of 3 years of experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry or
  • M.S.* in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, materials science, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline) with a minimum of 2 years of experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry
  • Hands-on experience in protein and/or nucleic acid characterization, for example HPLC, LC-MS, MALDI, qPCR, ddPCR, general protein chemistry, amino acid analysis, etc.

*Required degree must be completed prior to start date.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and particularly the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Ability to conduct multiple projects at the same time in and organized and independent manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different groups within BTEC, funding agencies, clients, interdisciplinary groups, faculty members and students from the University and industry representatives.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to adapt to constantly changing projects, priorities, projects and schedules.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and processes.
  • Proficiency with Google suite, MS Office suite, specifically MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint (or similar software).

Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, materials sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline) with a minimum of 3 years of experience in the life sciences or biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry or PhD.* in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, materials sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline).
  • Hands-on experience in membrane development and testing.
  • Hands-on experience in HPLC and UPLC.
  • Hands-on experience in downstream and/or upstream bioprocessing, with emphasis in process development and equipment testing and characterization.
  • Knowledge of statistical design of experiments and associated computational tools
  • Experience in grant application and management.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring students and colleagues.
  • Project management experience that led to successful completion of a project.
