The Surreal team is looking for the next generation of scientists and engineers to tackle the most ambitious problems in machine perception. The primary role of this internship is to conduct power and performance modeling, and design space exploration for end-to-end AR/VRHardware Systems from next generation machine perception applications in full system context from the device to the datacenter. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Scientist Intern, AR/VR Hardware Systems (PhD) Responsibilities:
  • Implementing simulation power and performance models
  • Designing and implementing design space exploration experiments
  • Profiling, benchmarking, and modeling AR/VR workloads
  • Building proof-of-concept prototypes and demonstrations
  • Collaboration with researchers across multiple disciplines and teams
  • Communication of research agenda, progress and results to a cross-disciplinary team

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in the field of VLSI, computer-aided design, computer architecture, or related relevant field
  • Strong foundational knowledge of hardware and computer architecture concepts
  • Strong programming experience with C++ or Python, experience building and operating in large codebases
  • Proven track record of strong interdisciplinary research collaborations and delivery of research prototypes
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

  • Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment
  • Experience building end-to-end codesigned systems in hardware such as domain-specific accelerators, CGRAs, SoCs, etc.
  • Experience with event-driven simulation and modeling for complex systems
  • Experience with or familiarity with at least one or more machine perception/computer vision applications such as simultaneous localization and mapping, visual inertial odometry, scene reconstruction, depth estimation, etc.
  • Experience implementing hardware accelerators with RTL and/or HLS
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Experience conducting chip tape out, post-silicon validation, and system integration
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as publications at leading workshops or conferences such as: ISSCC, VLSI, DATE, DAC, TCAD, ASPLOS, ISCA, MICRO
