Job description

Requisition Id 13091

Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

The Workflow and Ecosystem Services group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an Integrated Research Scientist Liaison / R&D Staff Member, passionate about engaging with Pathfinder Projects within the Department of Energy's Innovative Research Initiatives (IRI) program. This outstanding position demands a blend of research prowess and public engagement skills to advance understanding in large-scale distributed ecosystems, from edge-to-cloud-to-HPC. The ideal candidate is a dynamic researcher skilled in both the technical aspects of high-performance computing (HPC) and in communicating sophisticated scientific concepts to a diverse audience. This role involves developing innovative engagement strategies and tools to effectively connect with and educate various stakeholders about the technological advancements and their implications. A background in domain science and a history of working with HPC, cloud, and edge environments is desirable.  We are searching for a team-oriented individual, eager for self-learning and passionate about both supporting scientific communities and contributing to groundbreaking technologies. This position, nested within the Advanced Technologies Section of the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division at ORNL, offers the opportunity to be at the forefront of connecting ground breaking research with impactful, real-world applications in the realm of HPC and distributed systems, making significant contributions to the DOE's IRI program.

Our Team:
Our mission is to empower scientists to succeed by building and delivering tools, infrastructure, processes, and standard methodologies for coordinating their data and workflows, and making them universally accessible, understandable, findable, shareable, and reproducible. We are a creative and dynamic group of research and technical professionals who have a passion for workflow and software services enabling science across domains.

Our Organization:
This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division. The Advanced Technologies Section offers scientific, technical, operational, and thought leadership by developing, hardening, and deploying solutions for compute and data intensive computing environments. The NCCS provides an innovative computational and data science infrastructure, coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals, to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of fields. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities. NCCS has deployed the U.S.’s first Exascale system.

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an outstanding 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are crucial for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary science liaison for the Advanced Technologies Section (ATS) at NCCS, representing and promoting the section's research initiatives, particularly within the Pathfinder Projects of the DOE's IRI program.

  • Collaborate closely with the Science Engagement section to develop and implement effective strategies for communicating sophisticated scientific topics, focusing on the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum.

  • Synthesize and translate scientific research findings into engaging, accessible content for diverse audiences, including writing and contributing to peer-reviewed papers and technical reports.

  • Deliver presentations and engage in discussions at public forums and conferences, enhancing the visibility and impact of ORNL's research.

  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration within ORNL, working with various teams to ensure a cohesive approach to research and outreach.

  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Ph.D. in computational chemistry, computational biology, computational physics, or a related field and at least 2 years of research experience outside of Ph.D.

  • An established track record in research and development of HPC applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing and implementing science engagement strategies or public outreach programs, especially in a research or academic setting.

  • Proven track record to distill and communicate complex scientific or technical requirements to computer scientists.

  • Background in or familiarity with the scientific concepts related to distributed computing and the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum.

  • Skills for quickly adapting to and learning new scientific concepts and technologies.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail and a proactive approach to taking on challenges.

  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in team environments and engage with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication abilities, with a track record of impactful presentations and publications.
